Knife Suited for Engraving

Hi all,

I was hoping someone could point me toward quality folding knives with metal handles.

My sister is passing away at the young age of 42 from brain cancer. She could be gone in just 2-3 weeks, and she's leaving behind 2 young boys. She'd like to give them their first pocket knife as a parting gift & the symbolic message of them becoming young men.

I need a knife with a handle capable of holding a small inscription (which is why I am thinking metal handle). It must to be high quality so it will last their lifetimes. Cost is a lesser concern than quality and the ability to hold a messsge from their mother.

Thank you for any help.

So sorry to hear the situation but I greatly admire the sentiment. In the vein of heirloom quality pieces I'd go with small Chris Reeve Sebenzas.

Like said above, small sebenza bij Chris Reeve knives sounds perfect.

They can be ingraved and will last a lifetime.

Good luck.

Hell of a thing.

Were it me, I'd look at one of the Victorinox Alox knives.

They have a flat spot for engraving on the handle, come in a variety of colors, and few things make a better knifey gift to a young man than a SAK.

Condolences to you and your family, especially those boys :(

I like the Sebenza idea a lot. Another thought, if they want an heirloom piece to remember her by that won't get used, pick up 2 beautiful slipjoints and engrave the blades; then get them each an alox SAK with their initials to be used.

Damn it, man. Sorry about your sister.

As a knife guy, I also like the Chris Reeve Small Sebenza idea a lot.

Prayers to you and your family. I don't know how much you want to spend ... or ages of the boys or if the knives will be users or more keepsakes.

so if cost isn't an issue the CRK Sebenzas are very nice ... would be heirloom quailty and plenty strong if they will be users ... if looking at less expensive an Alox SAK make a perfect engraving knife and can be keepsake or users without spending alot.

Something in a mid range you may look at one of the ZT Ti. scaled ... I have seen some very nicely engraved scales. And check with Whitty at USA Made Blade you could get anodized in a personal color choice and Im not sure if they do engraving ... but hes a stand up guy and I bet he would be glad to help you get just what you want.

The Alox SAK is also a great knife (gave one to my son last year with his initials engraved on it:) ) but keep in mind the space for engraving will only fit about 10-12 characters.

Sorry for your lost, losing loved ones is hard.

Now as for knives, The Case executive is all stainless and has plenty of engraving real estate as I'm pretty sure that's exactly why they made it.
I believe that a kids first folder should be traditional so they can have the opportunity to appreciate them because it can be hard to after only experiencing modern one hand openers.

Thank you all for the input.

I can't believe I didn't think of the sebenza, but under the circumstances....

I just placed the order for 2 small sebenzas. It's the perfect choice because one of the boys is a lefty, so I could order a LH version for him.

Again, thank you.

I'm so sorry for your situation. Prayers go out to you, as well as your family in such a tragic time. I would also recommend the above suggested, a CRK Sebenza if that is something in your/her price range. Another suggesting, which I also recommend is visiting the Buck custom shop for a pair of engraved 110's. Or perhaps whatever else you see.

Edit: I'm glad to see you've found what you were looking for. They are definitely excellent knives.

The lefty version is definitely icing on the cake:). I believe that the boys will truly cherish those knives for the rest of their lives (and hopefully two lucky grandchildren as well). I'm glad we could help out on such a touching and heartfelt act:).

I am so sorry to read this. I would be happy to donate 2 knives and engrave them for you. If you are interested please shoot me an email to scott@usamadeblade.com

We can get them out ASAP for you!

**I posted before I read all the comments. Unfortunately we do not have any plain or left handed sebenzas in stock. The offer still stands though, so if finances in this situation are tough, please reach out.

Such a gentleman and asset to this community, Whitty.

The only thing I can add for the OP is possibly having wooden cases made for the knives for display.

My thinking is that if the knives are in a case, they will be harder to lose over time. I mean, how many of us have lost a single "loose" folder while moving or cleaning up the house?

My thinking is that the case will also make it more memorable when next to a photograph of their mother, rather than just a folder sitting on a shelf. It would almost be like the cases that hold a veterans flag.

Such a generous offer. I'm blown away by your kindness.
The finances aren't a problem, & the sebenzas are already purchased, but seriously. Wow.

Yes the Sebenza is a good choice .The Ti handle is actually fairly easy to engrave . Please teach them how to use the knives safely .
