Hi Guys,

I have created a Knife Wiki, an online freely editable encyclopedia for knives.

https://knifewiki.org

I have started to build a database of all knifemakers worldwide, this is something that is not currently available and should hopefully prove to be very useful and beneficial to the community.

I have also started to work on some other sections but require contributors to help build the site with their knowledge and information.

I hope you can join me and contribute in any way you can.

Registration is open, check the wiki how to page for help getting started.

That's a good idea, and I like the look of it. A lot of those Wikia / Fan Wiki Pages are really busy and dark looking.

seems like a good thing

is the intent for "knifemakers" as individuals only, or will you be looking at companies and manufacturers as well?

Thank you, yes I didn't like the look of those free wikis either, I had to go through the complicated process of installing the software onto the server but it provides a better experience for all with no ads or popups. The simplicity also allows it to be easily viewed on a mobile device.

Thank you, yes I'd like to keep "knifemakers" and "manufacturers" separate, one being more focused on the individual and the other on the knives. Having a complete list of knives produced by a certain manufacturer for example could be useful for collectors. I'd also like to see a description a each makers mark listed, this could be useful for future reference when finding info about a particular knife. Ultimately it's up to the fans and contributors to create whatever they would like to see on the site.

I appreciate the effort. Someone has put a lot of time into a wiki devoted specifically to Spyderco; maybe you can reach out to them to share information?

I'm a little confused by your defining knives by the designer and designating them as a manufacturer. For example, Chris Reeve is certainly the designer of the Sebenza but he's no longer involved in manufacturing the knives. The mantle has passed to Tim and Anne with the constant being the company "Chris Reeve Knives". Going forward any new CRK will not be designed by Chris but by someone else.

Likewise, Bob Terzuola certainly manufactures knives under his own brand but he also designs knives made by Spyderco, WE and CRKT to name a few. In fact, probably the majority of Terzuola knives in the wild aren't actually manufactured by Bob.

I'm worried that sorting by designer may ultimately make the wiki less useful than starting out with an initial sort by manufacturer.

Thank you, yes no reason we couldn't consolidate the wikis.

I think there are knifemakers who created companies and companies formed by designers and engineers. We could easily list both, Ernest Emerson and Emerson Knives for example. The personal page listing bio and early custom work and the company page with info around formation and past and current models.

No reason we couldn't make a sort by manufacturer, it's an open system with endless possibility.

I assume you’re hoping for articles on various steel types, knife construction types, blade tip types, lock types, etc....

Also maybe you could curate it so that if someone types “American custom knife makers,” a list will come up with links to a page that describes each maker.

A site like this will take forever to build. Who knows though in 5-10 years it could replace bladeforums as the place where people go to ask knife questions.

Basically instead of typing in google; “what is an axis lock knife bladeforums,” in google you would type, “axis lock knifewiki?”

It would seem easier to have Designer and Manufacturer/Maker as separate fields where Manufacturer/Maker is either the company making the knife or the custom maker of the knife. If you will be including specific knives as articles/pages of the database. I would rather this start with more basic knife information such as steels, blade shapes, etc all the more functional knowledge to knowing more about knives and the designs.

Yes blade steels and such would certainly be required.

You can take a look at the sitemap to see the category's and pages created so far.

I just looked at the US knifemakers. I sure wouldn't put Mick Strider on there. You should do a search on here concerning that name. Which is not his real name among many other reasons not to have him listed as a knife maker.--KV

Brings up a lot of search results, maybe you could update the wiki article. :D

EDIT - Found the mega thread, won't read all 82 pages but I'll remove it from the list as it is a contentious issue and could cause problems.

Would certainly make it easier than reading an 80 page thread. It's up to you guys, I don't know enough about the issue to write the article and I didn't make a wiki with the intention of writing everything myself. :D

I registered and logged in. I keep trying to add a USA maker, but cannot get the red link. It looks like I am following the instructions to the letter.

Looks like your typing in the edit summary box, the code is correct just place it under the other names.

Many varieties of knives fall into chopping tools. Where will be the line between knives and knives that are on the edge if being call something different? Will it just be fixed blades and folders ?

Interesting fact, dark backgrounds are better for your eye health. Font colours that have less contrast with the background are also better for eye health. Thus, "dark" websites have actual health benefits.
