So I've been thinking, there's a couple of pretty cool guys I work with that I've become pretty good friends with in the last few months. We all like knives and since we work in an office about all we can carry are inconspicuous folders.
Well they're decent guys and I feel sorry for them because they both carry S&W or some no name swap meet CCC. I've shown them my spyderco harpy, or one of my numerous benchmades, and needless to say after handling them they're drool could practically rust the blade.
I would like to get them a couple of cheaper well-made folders and I'm looking to spend about 45 dollars total. What would you suggest? Right now I'm leaning towards a pair of Benchmade mini-pikas.

Thanks!

Byrds would do admirably. Lots of choices in the Byrd line.

KaBar Doziers in AUS8 would also be good.

Buck has some blades in the $20 range as well. I read good things about the Mantis model.

case whittler...
vic outrider...
case sodbuster jr...
buck iceman ???,,,new ...looks ok

Damn what a nice guy you are! Well if you are going to do that then get them something that they cannot buy themselves at a local wallymart ($hithole, dont get me started) I agree get a BM or something at a sporting store or online so they can take alittle pride in their new pieces. Very kind of you to do that Im sure regardless they would appreciate it. Take care.

I will second the Byrd Line, after handling them, I am impressed, They arent Quite Spydercos but their not half bad either, I am looking at them as gifts for my EMS Crew this year, and have already ordered a few for other friends.

I got some Benchmites for family members and had initials put on them by Knifeworks (some sort of laser engraving) and they turned out very nice. They are great little knives.

Kershaw JYD II fits the bill and they're fun to play with too.

Doh, I was thinking $45 per, not for both. My bad.

You could get them SAK's (Swiss Army Knives) or something from Spyderco.

Kershaw storm is a nice knife but might come in slightly more than what you are looking to spend (can find them for about $25 if you shop around online).

I normally dont like coated blades but I got an all black one and I like the look better than the silver.

I have had two of the Mini Pika and I have to say that the Spyderco Byrds are flat out better knives. They are also a little less money I think. Go with the G-10 or SS handles as the FRN looks and feels cheap. I like the FRN but the G-10 would make a more impressive gift.

It sounds like a large knife might be too much so the Cara Cara G-10 is probably out but it is a great knife for the money. How about one of the smaller G-10 Byrds like the Meadolark? I have one in FRN and it is about the size of a Delica. Nice size for all around light duty. Won't scare the sheeple too mcuh either!

I have the Byrd Meadowlark in FRN and it is really a sweet little knife. I am honestly floored by the quality for such a low price. About $17 + shipping.

I also have a Kabar Dozier Thumb Hole Folder: it is also amazing for the price. About $20 +shipping.

I know nothing of the Benchmade knives, but hear they also have amazing bang-for-the-buck.

For something slightly different: How about a Victorinox Soldier? You can get one shipped for $21.50.
The Soldier is the one knife I will never be without. It is strong, sharp, easy to sharpen, inexpensive, pretty (strange, but the alox really does look kinda "pretty"), and very, very useful with all of the extra tools.
It also snaps open and closed with authority, and feels like "quality."

Another plus for the Soldier is that it is fairly sheeple friendly.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I'm going to look into the byrd line for sure, and the ka-bar's sound good too. I think they would prefer something that clipped on their pocket, otherwise I'd definitely consider a sak.

I like the byrd Raven I think? : ]

I had a Dozer and I was very dissapointed. It has a really cheap clip and the blade was not sharp when I got it. It also has what I consider a blunt tip. Mine was the drop point with the thumb stub not the hole. I hear the one with the hole is the best one. You should check this out in person before you buy as you might not like it.

The Byrd on the other hand may impress the heck out of you when you get it. I know it did with me. I got a G-10 Cara Cara for about $25 shipped and I couldn't believe the quality. It locked up better than my Manix!

I have all the "larger" type Byrd knives and they are MORE than fine for the price. I recommend the Byrd Cara Cara also. A really nice knife.

WOOK

Go with Byrds. A couple of G-10 Meadowlarks shouldn't cost you more than about 45-50 bucks and they are outstanding.
