Hey folks, I am a 60% disabled Iraq veteran, i served in the Us Army from 2001-2007 active duty. Got deployed to Ramadi Iraq from 2005-2006. Hell hole. I am/was a grunt. Ground pounder, and never left the gate without a knife strapped to me. Had a "custom" knife a friend made for me, garage builder. I got hit by several IED's and incoming mortar fire. Thanksgiving day in 2005 i got hit directly by a mortar and got burns and had to get shrapnel removed from my side and leg, and had to have three surgeries to repait the inner workings of my head, they had to put titanium plates on my skull behind my left ear, had to haeve full titanium reconstruction of my entire hearing canal. i am 80% deaf in the left ear. anyways, the point is when the medics got me, they removed all my gear, including my knife that was attached to my body armor. i never saw it again. Now that I am out, i cannot find a job due to injuries. I cannot stand for too long as my lower back ahs several compressed and dislocated? discs, pending back surgery, and i cannot walk for too long as i still ahve some shrapnel in my hip floating around and it grinds, (waiting for it too work its way out as the VA doctor put it) So not having a job, i am living off a VA disability check. So buying a badass custom fixed blade is out because the price of these i see on here, are about half of what i make on my va check. So i am asking does anyone on here, donate to veterans or willing to donate or know someone who does. I miss my knife, i would love to carry one again. these walmart knives just are not good at all but its affordable on my budget. I am also a member of the Wounded Warrior Project. I have all papers verifying my service to this great nation. Thanks for reading and sorry if I took up too much time...Just really miss my knife.

You should apply for SS disability as well. Apply on the computer, and print off a copy because they will lose your first one. And don't be afraid to get your congressman involved. They have a rep who handles SS and VA affairs.

Im also a disabled veteran. I also have 2 children. I can never work again, I was deployed when my daughter was born, I was injured overseas as well, i didnt get my first disability check for 2 years and lost everything my family owned. You are not alone in this, I know of a lot more of us on this board as well. But your only posts on the board are asking for a free knife and you are using your service as a crutch, wanting people to feel bad for you and give you something free. We served our country and we should be proud of our actions, not try and make others feel bad for you.

If you came on this board and got to know the people and was here to learn or share, the chances of you getting a knife free eventually is a lot higher than joining to beg for something free. As another Army disabled veteran i ask you to be proud of your actions and proud of your scars. Get to know the people here. learn about knives and share what you know, share your experiences, talk about BLADES, AND THEN join some contests, and the multiples of give a ways that happen all the time.

I write this in hopes you understand you are doing the Military a great injustice by solely joining to make other feel bad for you in hopes of getting something free. Thats not the Code in which you swore to honor.

Sincerely, no disrespect meant,

Another Disabled Army veteran,

Richard

i was only asking because i cannot list anything to sell, or vice versa as there are soo many rules about this page. i have made all sorts of friends out and about and on other pages, i have donated my artistic services to others, as i draw photos and portraits for members of the military who have fallen, i have done my fair share of helping out others and have maybe twice ever asked for anything, i am very pround of my service, i have my award rack in a shadow box on top of my tv, i see it daily, i email my friends who are still in walter reed recovering. im sure you have never asked for a handout for anything. im sure you refused when someone offered to pay for your food, all veterans have asked for something, you are a liar if you havnt.

Noted. All other vets ask for handouts.

I've been blessed by having a few meals paid for, not because I've asked.

You like every other vet made a blank check when you enlisted up to and including your life, if you really can't work because of injury, you need to find an aggressive SS advocate.

Maybe it's pain and suffering talking, but you sound like a piece of work right now.

Im not here to argue with you, Im not your enemy, i just dont like anything that gives a bad impression of the military i served. We signed up, we fought for our countries by our choice, or the choices we made. Getting hurt was always a possibility, and a good one for a grunt signing up at war time. Now im not discrediting your injuries or the fact that you served, im grateful, Good for you, I appreciate your service and every other brother in arms i ever had service.

And of course i have needed help before, of course i have asked for things i NEEDED, But i dont try and make another human beings feel bad for my injuries in hopes of getting something I "WANTED" free from them.

You say you do these good things you mention in other places, why not ask "them there" for a knife in return--- OR VICE VERSA --- Why not do some good here, if nothing more than sharing your knowledge about weapons and survival? If you are artistic why not offer the good men and women who are members here, and were also members of the service, if you could make a portrait for them? Do it for free, out of the goodness of your heart. Karma man, it will come back to you.

If i seen a thread that said "a disabled veteran was making portraits for other disabled veterans who love knives" - but this vet is down on his luck at the moment without any blades. - or anything similar - Id be one of the first ones to ask you for a portrait. But in return you would receive a knife in the mail without even asking for it. I know a lot of guys on this board, and they are kind generous people who are quick to help others. Join in and get to know them first, dont just jump in asking for something before you have contributed anything to the forum.

Anyway welcome to the forums, hopefully you stick around and show you want to be a member for more reason than a free knife.

Richard.

Another vet here, 50% disabled because of injuries to right leg and foot that left me on a cane for the rest of my life.

First, you need to go down to the financial assistance office at your VA hospital and fill out the papers for financial aid and vocational training. You are eligible for job skills testing and training to transition to civilian life. They will help you. I was given a medical discharge and they got me into a job training program, and I became a machinist. There's lots of jobs that you don't have to stand up for.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and get out there. I did the same thing when I came home, and I was lucky enough that I had a crusty grandfather who literally kicked me in the a$$ and told me to get over it. I did. I was married with one child and another on the way, so I did what I had to do. I did my rehab and went to work. So can you. Like Skimo said, when we enlisted, we made out a blank check to the government up to and including our life. Many generations have come and went that had severe injuries from some damm war, and they came home and got on with their life. And dropping in on forums and asking for free handouts is not cool. You make me and other vets ashamed. My bud from high school lost his right arm above the elbow. Last time he saw his arm it was laying in some rice paddy. Now he's had a full life and is retiring from his job as a computer IT guy for a tech company. His nickname in the classic street rod club he's in is the 'one arm bandit'.

If you're not some troll seeing if he can score a free knife, get started on the rest of your life.

Carl.

Have to be 100% disabled to get SS, I have looked into it

You need to look deeper. Click here for an example of someone who got SSDI approved while still on active duty. SSDI and VA compensation have different criteria, either you meet it or you don't. Apply for IU, contact your local DAV office for assistance. Lots of information on the Veterans Benefits Network Forum http://vets.yuku.com/

Condolences on the loss of your knife, nothing can ever replace that one, be thankful you are alive. Would like to see a pic of your rack / shadow box if possible.

Anyone interested in speaking to a fella that acts as an advocate for vets with the VA shoot me an email, not a pm as it fills up too fast. He helped me several years ago and was a great boost in getting stuff done/moving. He's kinda a PITA but he has his way of doing things and it works. To this day, over 5 years since I met with him he still persues the goals we agreed upon. He is a great asset and doesn't charge a fee. He suggested a one time donation of one month of what he gets you to help him keep doing what he does, a small price and only after he does his thing.

Disabled Vet rated at 70% here due to cancer, and with no real use of my left arm & hand.

Like jackknife mentioned you need to get into the Vocational Rehabilitation program. When I was retired out in 1999 you automatically qualified for it if you were rated at 30% or higher. Not only do they pay for your full tuition, supplies, and books, they also pay you a supplement if you are taking a half-load, or more, of classes. This way not only are you getting an education, you are getting some extra cash.

Don't let your disability define who you are.

You can get an inexpensive knife to hold you over till your situation improves. For fixed blades I highly recommend Mora knives. For folders check out some of the lower priced Kershaws like the Skyline, Scrambler, or Burst. These will serve most of your knife needs just fine. If the knife you lost was made by a friend, maybe you can work out a deal with him to get one just like it.

Jdr9942, worldwood, jackknife, halfkeck, ceptor781, skimo, chief ...thank you for your service.
