Knives in Vegas

So I will be heading to Vegas here in about two weeks and I was wondering what kind of city it is, is it knife friendly? I ask because I will be flying out there by myself and I will only be taking one knife and will be spending a lot of time out away from my hotel. Is there a lot of places with metal detectors that I have to worry about? Do all of the casino's check you on the way in? I plan on going out and enjoying the town but, as you all can imagine, I feel naked without a knife. I am concerned that I will run into a lot of hassle out there seeing the sights with one. Any feedback from people who have been there and taken knives I would greatly appreciate.

Now as far as which knife I am going to take, I have researched and found that the knife laws for the city/county limit me to less then 3" blade length so I cannot take my normal Grip 551 with me. I am thinking about getting something new to make the trip with me. I am thinking an Emerson Mini A-100 might be nice to get for the trip. That is just my thought right now I may end up taking something else I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks

You'll be fine in Vegas as long as you don't whip it out... hello double entendre!

Last time I was there I carried my pocket knives, never got a second glance.

No metal detectors, the security is good but not overbearing like that, they don't want to hassle you, they want to hustle you.

I've really had no problems walking around Vegas with a pocket knife. So long as you stay w/ in the legal limit and behave, you should be ok. I edc a spyderco lava, a boker wharcom, kershaw cyclone and a tenacious (one knife at a time) - all with no problems from the local law enforcement or the casino security. One thing I don't do is go to the popular night clubs so I can't really say much about those venues.
Hope this helps

Forum shops at Caesar's is about the only place I ( and a friend ) had an issue. He was wearing a BM 210 ( well within legal length ) , and I was carrying a Strider PT clipped to my pocket.

The 3" length is ridiculous , but to comply I carry a 3" fixed blade , Strider PT CC and a slip joint of some kind. ( as well as a Colt Officers ACP concealed - makes up for the short blade ;) )

Only place I am aware that had a sign posted against carry was Main Street Station Casino. ( even then it was only at one entrance ).

Like Jedelacruz , I don't go to the clubs so can't offer advice on that.

I lived in Vegas for the past year, it seems to be pretty laid back. Casinos will not hassle you at all, the volume of traffic is to high to search everyone. I have walked the Strip and entered every casino and not one checked me for a knife.I carried my Benchmade Vex daily and I spent many a drunken night on the Strip with not one run in with the police. Also, I carried it consistently on UNLV's campus and didn't get bothered at all.

And as for the limit on size, as long as you don't flash your knife, you'll be fine. I'm going down there with my Griptilian this weekend and don't plan on getting hassled (unless I get pulled over).

In most cases you will. I have asked about 10 different LEO's that I know , and each gave me a different idea on what they " thought " the legal length was. Generally , you don't act like a thug or troublemaker you will be OK , in most cases.

At the forum shops we were just chilling , but we were still hassled by the " mall cop ". All because he saw a pocket clip and had no clue what the legal length was.

Whatever you do on your trip here , don't go to the knife shop on Sahara to buy , unless you want to pay full retail ( sometimes retail + ).

I was there a couple months back and carried a Kershaw OD-1 while I was there. I don't know about the police but the casinos and clubs didn't seem to notice the pocket clip. It's not a huge deal, you don't have to walk through metal detectors or anything crazy. The Las Vegas airport however is a whole other story in itself. I wouldn't want to try getting contraband through them. You have the choice of getting frisked or stepping inside a big tube and have radio waves sent through your body so they can see you in your underwear. I just put my knife in my luggage though and that was fine.

thanks for the information, guys... family's taking a trip down there in a few months and this is good stuff to know.

Thanks a lot everybody this is all what I was figuring but I just wanted some first hand knowledge to ease my mind. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't worry about it. A couple of years ago, my girlfriend and I went to Vegas to visit her son, who lives and works there. We were in Vegas, Henderson, Laughlin and Primm, driving around and exploring. During the whole time, I carried a 4" lockblade folder in my right front trouser pocket, clip removed and totally concealed. I didn't have a single problem with LEOs or private security types.

Been living in Vegas since 1986 ( Henderson is a few miles outside of Vegas ) , and I can tell you that the majority of LE's have zero clue what the law actually is. Casino security even less a clue. For grins we called the desk seargant at LVMPD a few years ago , and asked what was blade length was legal for concealed and also open carry , never got a clear answer from anyone , nor from anyone substation. One female officer just said " As long as it is not a black fighting or hunting knife ".... nice eh ?

One way to look at it , is , if it is concealed then nobody knows. Having a concealed firearms permit , I won't conceal anything over 3". I wouldn't advise carrying a beast of a folder with a pocket clip around the strip. Them LVMP bicycle cops ain't too friendly sometimes ( but riding a bike in 115 heat will do that too you ).

It comes down to how you carry yourself. I wouldnt advise doing any " dramatic openings " with a 4" bladed folder in highly crowded areas ( strip , downtown Fremont st , etc ).

I did carry a Strider AR , and an SMF daily for years ( now they are relinquished to home , shop , gun club and desert thrashing carry ) and never had a hassle. I just find it easier to carry a 3" or less blade in addition to Officers ACP ( leave rooms for more mags ).

Whatever you decide , I hope you enjoy your stay here in Vegas, Drop by the Gun Store on Tropicana and rent a machine gun while you are here. It's VERY popular with the tourists.
