Are there any decent knives made in India that are reasonable in price? An Indian friend is going back to India soon, Mumbai and I am interested in having him pick up something for me. What should I be looking for?

Thanks

Not really unless you know someone. There is a traditional folding pattern called a Rampuri that is hard to find in America, but might make an interesting keepsake.

There are some very unique historical push daggers in India.
No idea if one can buy them nowadays.

There are some decent Kukris but from what I've seen in India (going there every year ) you get better and original Nepali Kukris right here in our forum.
Himalayan Imports subforum ☺

One might look for a Sikh kirpan. Serious knives.

Though I'd wonder if you would just end up with just something touristy.

Depends I'd guess. Tourist "specials" are more than likely poorly made out of poor quality metals not really for more than a "wall hanger" or letter opener.
But I'll bet decently made knives can be had with a bit of searching, asking and willingness to pay. Just remember it will probably be a hand made knife using basic forges, grinders, sharpening, etc. and not nearly up to the quality, fit and finish of the knives we can easily buy but you may be getting a knife made by someone who's family, etc. has been making knives and tools for generations...pretty cool in my opinion.

Remember you will get what you pay for so don't expect a lot for a few bucks...

Thanks for the tips. The guy that is going grew up there and I just asked him to bring me a nice knife made in India, we'll see what he comes up with.

I can't speak for Dew, but I'd be happy if someone I knew went to India and brought me a "wallhanger" gift from India. The act of getting it hand-delivered from India would be worth more than the knife itself.

I would be on the lookout for a good kukri there....then maybe something traditional for a souvenir.

Can't disagree with that...I'd much prefer that over an internet purchase any day...

My brother came back with 2 Chinese "Jian" swords when he took a trip years ago. They're some sort of carbon steel (low rust resistance since it started spotting over in CA of all places), rat tang, wall hangers. But still, really really cool to have. One is longer than the other and they have the Big and Little Dippers engraved on each respectively and are fully decorated in traditional Chinese fashion.

I have to polish up mine because it's showing a lot of scuff for very little fooling around. The quality really doesn't bother me though because there's no excuse for me to have swords as anything other than wall hangers.
I just have the 1 brother so they also hold huge sentimental value to us both.

India, and other part of the continent near India make good knives. See a lots of these knive showing up at Gun Shows near where I live. Pakistan seem to produce some of the best quailty, but of all the knives I have seen, loooked at, and last touched & closly examined.

The price is fair, the quality is OK, but the FINE FIT & FINISH I have grown accustom to from American Customer Makers is not there.

But you must remember in this part of the world these knives are used, and abused. They for the most part are not build to be sghow pieces.

JMHO.
