Kukri in 3V... could this be a thing??

I love my Cold Steel Kukris. I have one in SK5 and one in Carbon V and couldn't ask for a better all around large blade. I've owned a Busse Killa Zilla, a couple HI and a McCurdy and nothing beats the CS in my book.

What is the possibility of a Gurkha Kukri in 3V at some point? I am more than impressed with SK5 and have literally beaten the crap out of it with no negative results. I haven't used the Carbon V so much but people rave about it. It's not super important that the steel would be more stain resistant, I couldn't imagine it would be tougher. Who else would like to see a Gurkha Kukri in 3V ? Do you think 3V would even be necessary or just a cost step up with little gain in utility.

So, yeah! 3V kukri... Whaddaya think?

I have a normal kukri from HI and this thing is very solid. I think the extra cost wouldnt even be noticed, ever.

It could be a thing, maybe. A very expensive thing, perhaps not much cheaper than the San Mai III kukri, but possible. It's a good steel for the application.

Would I buy one, personally? Probably, if I didn't have a Carbon V kukri.

Still, right now they're still working on getting the O1 kukri on the shelves, so I wouldn't hold my breath for a 3V kukri just yet.

I have no experience with 3V and am not sure what the metals qualities are. Same goes for the 01 steel. I do know the SK5 well and aside from having to remember to oil it after use it is hard to complain about it. I am used to carbon steel on my work blades so oiling is just second nature to me. I also have a Trail Master & Recon Scout in SK5 and an SRK in Aus 8A.

I hear very good things about the San Mai III so I am not sure why they are now going to the 01 but personally, I would rather but two SK5's and a lifetime supply of oil rather than spend the extra money on the San Mai II or the 01. I am not saying they are not good steels or worth the price, I'm just cheap and also competely satisfied with the SK5.

I also have no clue on what 3V has to offer. It seems simple carbon steels are ideal for large working blades. I think CS found the perfect model in choosing relatively low cost steels and turning them into something special with optimum treatment. What I'd like to see done with the Gurkha is to put some effort into designing an ergonomic handle of some hard and highly durable material. Micarta or G10 would be nice. My ESEE Junglas has a well designed micarta handle and it works really well. If CS really got serious, they would do a bolt on handle so the user could change or replace at will. That would also take care of the loose or beat up handle complaints and offer another option of materials.

Proper HT and a good coating will do the job.

3V is an excellent choice for toughness with good wear resistance. Price tag however might go parallel with the HIGH toughness offered.

No doubt that the price would go up with a 3V blade. I think it would be a great offering in place of the San Mai Kukri or an option somewhere in the middle. Again , I've had no problems with my SK-5 Kukri and have found it, to this point, to be more than adequate. 3V, however, with a good heat treat would be absolutely insane.

"It’s always been my dream to offer the Gurkha Kukri Plus in 3V and I’m delighted we finally got it done despite all the obstacles. You see a 3v blade this big and thick is very, very expensive to make. Just the steel alone costs a fortune mot to mention the laser cutting machine, heat treating, polishing and hand sharpening. But the results I think are well worth it. While undeniably expensive, this knife will out perform just about any kukri or knife you can name for that matter, especially when you compare price. You may be able to get a custom knife to beat it but not at anywhere near the price we’re asking. Ron don’t walk and buy this knife while you can as it’s a work of love when we make it, not profit!!!" - Lynn Thompson

Hmm I got a mid-tech kukri from Dan Tope Knives in CPM3V for less than that...

Have been interested in the possibility of this knife for years. But pricing it close to the cost of a 12" CPK is just not competitive.
