Why do certain models come with a kydex sheath and others with a molded plastic one? Why not all plastic or all kydex? What pushes certain models to one or the other?

The cost of making the molds for plastic is pretty expensive. That's why you see the mix of kydex vs. molded plastic.

I thought it had to do with the blade-tec / ontario processing and carry over. IMO the kydex is BA and adds to the character that is Esee... T
I'll be makin kydex sheaths for my 3 and 6...

Plastic vs kydex b/c the plastic takes temperature changes a lot better then the kydex does. So it offers sheath that will be able to be taken most anywhere.

I kinda prefer the molded sheaths better, Everybody does Kydex.... whether factory or aftermarket the system is flooded with Kydex. The injected molded sheath, have a better retension & can handle different climate changes than kydex

I have also been wondering this myself. I really like the molded plastic sheath on my rc-3 swat edition. Is there any way to get molded plastic sheaths for the other sizes? For example the esee 4?

I never realized that the plastic would hold up better than kydex, i always figured that it would be more brittle in cold temps, i learn somethin new every day here

Same here.

No idea as to the why, but I do like how the molded plastic is more quiet upon drawing and sheathing the knife than the kydex is.
