Maybe the wrong forum to ask this question, if so, I apologize. It seems most of my sheaths have been made with 3/16" rivets. I have decided to attempt making a really ugly colored sheath and have sourced everything I need. However, I haven't been able to figure out through many google searches and a lot of forum trolling what the preferred tool or method is for crimping the rivets.

I've seen both a press type job, and a hand tool that you just hammer. Can anyone here give me a recommendation on what would be the best option? This isn't going to be high volume by any means, but I'm not opposed to spending around $100 for a press rather than hammering things together.

Thanks in advance!

moved to correct forum.
The knife kits hand held one works just fine.

Torn between spending a little bit of money or just a little more... I really think this would be something for a one or two time project. I actually mentioned some of the stuff I was thinking of doing to DB (thanks for moving the thread) and thought why not try to make a sheath and a holster too. Look fairly straightforward with the handheld/hammer setup for as little as I'd ever use it. Originally I was trying to join the Kydex sheets on the thin edge and had contacted a few Kydex suppliers for procedures, but have gotten the feedback from people here that a mechanical fastener is always best when possible.

Thanks for the ideas and links everyone!

Right on Jason; I like to use mine on the leather stamps for my sheaths.
Your leather stamps, just out of curiosity, do you make them yourself? My blacksmith friends dad is a grizzly old man that doesn't like to talk about anything unless he's three sheets to the wind is an incredible leather worker. I believe he like to make saddles more than anything. But passing on information is not something does well. He basically just grunts at you until he's so drunk he can't make words anymore.

If you have someone make them for you, do you have anyone you could recommend? I have been wanting to get a metal stamp/brand made for quite some time. I've had an artist create what I want, but and engraver I am not...

If you look on auction sites and such at grommet presses/machines you can probably find one pretty cheap that typically already comes with a 6mm die set, which works perfectly fine for the 1/4" eyelets from sheath material suppliers. For 3/16" you'd probably need 5mm or maybe 4.5? I'm bad at math.

The two issues with this are that the presses can't accept common 3/8" die shanks and the bottom die needs some serious grinding for sheath work because they're huge. The first one shouldn't be an issue for what you want to do, so if you have an angle grinder or something it's an option.

Purest, I bought my arbor press stamps off of eBay, under "arbor press leather stamps". The maker's name is Bob Polgar, and I believe he would custom make one for you.

On eBay he is listed as dynamite_tnt.
