Alright, delved into the world of Kydex sheaths recently and ordered everything...except the rivet flaring dies. Any alternatives to the CKK dies or do I just need to bite the bullet and order them?

Erik, I just got my 1/4" dies in this week. They work, I don't know of an alternative. The problem is that they are usually on back order. I am still waiting for the smaller dies to come in. Be sure to get the right rivets, they are also frequently on back order..

Louis.

Yea, I got the 1/4" #8 rivets. Didn't even think about how to flare them. Luckily had enough Chicago screws to get the one done I needed it for. Guess I'll put the flaring dies on order and rig my arbor for using them...or just use my drill press. I had actually contemplated turning my own rivet set, but wasn't sure what the set up was. Are the tips spring loaded on the dies?

They are not spring loaded, but they look like the would be pretty hard to make! I have a bridgeport but I don't really know how to use it yet... Maybe one day..

the small ones have been on backorder since before christmas. just starting to get comfortable with my used enco 13x40 gearhead lathe. think i will give them a whirl, now that i am off the overtime list at work....

you can order a eyelet setting punch from Tandy Leather that will do em albiet slower. I think they only cost a couple of bucks.

yeah but i would stay away from the hand eyelet setter. it won't look anywhere near as professional as using the setter dies. Don't bother with buying a flariing press (if you're thinking of one). Just use a drill press and make something like a piece of wood to hold the bottom die and drill a hole so the die can sit in. I personally used a piece of thick aluminum to hold the bottom die straight. Check the die itself on the part of the die that does not have the point on it to see if it's nice and smooth. If not, smooth it out somehow otherwise it might cause a small ding in the rivet itself for aesthetics. or put a piece of masking tape over to make sure you protect the rivet from the setting die.

Thanks, guys. Ordered the 1/4" die set last night. Appreciate the input. I'll get set up a jig for my arbor press or just use my mini mill.

Tracys Dies at USA Knifemaker have always worked well for me.

Do you have a link to the product?
I went to http://usaknifemaker.com, searched for "rivet" and also "tracy", but didn't find anything.

Thanks!

They are not rivets, they are eyelets
forget those rivet guns

I really like Knife Kits website, very well layed out- but the dies, not as good.
The Knifemaker USA dies are better than the others I tried.

The Knifemaker USA website is poorly organized, everything is everywhere
You have to search and learn where things are

http://usaknifemaker.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=eyelets+

Go with the best eyelets and the best dies
The cheap ones that mash and split will just frustrate you .

Thanks for your help! Seems like all the 1/4 inch tools are out of stock currently :(

I hate to contribute to a 5 year old dead thread but I've been using the knifekits dies for about a year and have gone through over1000 eyelets and haven't split one yet. Maybe thrive changed their design lately but mine work great and were cheaper than tracys. Just make sure you use them in an arbor press.
