Kydex Sheath: Break in tips?

I just purchased a SOG Seal Pup Elite, and think it's a wonderfull tool! I look forward to many long years of use.

The Kydex holster, with the groove, seems like a neat idea, but the knife snaps into the sheath way to tight for practical use. Are there any tips on how to loosen the sheath where is still retains the knife, but allows easy presentation? I give myself a wedgie every time I try to pull the knife from the scabbard!

Thanks!

Harvey,
There may be many ways to do this but SOG has instructions for adapting your new knife to its kydex sheath up to and including sending it into their customer service to perform the task. You can contact Chris at marketing@sogknives.com or call 1-888-SOG-BEST and ask for instructions. Or you can do what I did which is run the mouth or opening under hot water for a short time which softens slightly the material and pull the opening apart (slightly) and hold until cool then try the knife. Continue the procedure until it draws easily. if it loosens too much reverse the process holding the mouth closer together while allowing to cool. Just remember that these sheaths are jump rated which means you can strap one on and dive out of an airplane and not worry about losing the knife. Any manipulation of the sheath will compromise the integrity of that rating to one degree or another so caution is the key. Hope this helps and like I said there may be many ways to do this. This works for me.

Thanks, Denny.

I dropped SOG a note a short while ago. I'll let you know what I find out.

I tried “cold” stretching the opening, which is what a SOG sales rep recommended via phone yesterday, but no luck. The Kydex has a good memory and springs back to the original shape pretty quick.

Your hot water trick seems like a good idea. I just need to fine tune the opening to a moderate tightness. What I have now is ridiculously tight and dangerous. -The knife is out of control when it finally releases. Once adjusted, I think the sheath will work well for my needs.

Hi 300WSM,

I tried your hot water trick to adjust the tension on my sheath and it worked like a charm!

Thanks!

don`t break the sheath in , break it in half and laugh! then go get yourself a better sheath

Hey Guys...

A good trick to use with a tight fitting sheath is to use a littel (and I mean a little) SNAP brand silicone spray....

I use this all the time to slick things up...
JUst remember a VERY little goes a long way...

A light spray on a Q-tip then wiped inside the mouth works well..
