Lansky crock stick, opinion?

Hey all, so I'm shopping for a Bday present for my friend, and he had expressed some interest in a knife sharpener.

I'm thinking of getting him a Lanksy Crock stick as a nice alternative to the Sharpmaker.

The sharpmaker is too expensive for a gift (over the price limit we discussed) so I was hoping that the Lanksy would make for a nice stand in.

How well does it work? Can it sharpen SE knives?

Also, are the "gourmet" ones with the 9" rods worth the extra money?

Thanks!
Mark

i would go with the crock sticks too. for years i used to use an ez sharp to work up a burr and then go to a single ceramic stick to remove the burr and polish the edge. smiths makes some good quality ceramic sticks if you can find them. the whiter the stick the better. stay away from yellowish or off white colored ceramic sticks.

Buy him a smiths benchstone or a DMT dia-fold, he will create less bad habits and have better edges. I guess you could say I got something against ceramic rods and I do but for good reason. Stay away from them as much as you can.

diamonds stones wear out unlike ceramics. i have a ceramic rod that i bought back in 1974 and its still going strong. i would go with ceramics before diamonds

If I wear out my diamond stones before I die I'll be impressed.

Keep in mind that crock stick sharpeners do little more than maintain an edge... they aren't very good for actually sharpening a really dull knife. (They can do it, but it takes a long time, there are much better alternatives). It also requires that the knives match the angles to work properly. So, I would find out what his needs really are when he says he wants a "knife sharpener".

Even a small Lansky guided kit with some stones might be a better alternative.

Hm, I would have thought just the opposite.

a buddy has a set of diamond stones he paid good money for that we wore out sharpening lathe tools.

Which diamond stones were they exactly and how were they used? I've never heard of anyone wearing out a DMT or even the Sharpmaker diamond rods in a short amount of time.

Hmm, probably ground the tools on the stones too hard and dislocated the diamonds. Because other than that, I don't see how diamond stones can "wear."

WAY too much pressure. Diamonds don't take much to cut and they don't wear out "sharpening lathe tools". Let me know when lathe tools can wear out diamonds in a sharpening.
