Lanyard for pocket carry?

I've seen a couple of examples of knives with a short lanyard and a bead attached, assuming this is a pocket carry setup. What is the thinking on the length of the lanyard? Carried slip joints and lock backs in RF without clips for years then went to clips and never looked back but most clipped on knives make that pocket hard to use for anything else.

Tried searching but didn't come up with any discussions.

I attached a lanyard about 8 inches long (including the smaller biner at the end) to most of my SAK's . It allows me to clip my SAK's to a belt loop so they hang uptight in my pocket. It can be removed quickly if it gets in the way when using the knife.

I use a 2 inch loop lanyard. No bead just a knot. It allows me to put one finger through and pull. I carry rf pocket clipped. It makes it easier to pull out or able to pull out with one finger.

Not to quibble, but I use a FOB of between 2 and 6 inches to hook under belt depending on knife size, to allow rf carry without eating holes in the pocket cloth. But then again I also use on keys as well. Also have a lot of three finger handles so as to inprove grip. Dont think Ive ever had a bead on anything tho

Lanyards are personal preference. I don't care for them but many fellows do. Tie on your favorite knife, usually a couple of inches in length, and see for yourself if it makes a difference or not.

I have one 1.5" lanyard with a bead on my clipped folder in rh pocket. Just makes it easier for me to pull it out, and I don't worry about losing it by having it catch on something.

Having lost 3 knives at work and buying a new pair of work pants do to RF pocket getting chewed up I started using a lanyard and carrying it in my RR pocket so it didn't destroy my cell screen. Since I wasn't sure if I would like it I took a 8'' piece of paracord and tied a knot on both ends and hooked it under the clip and I have to say that it has been working out just fine and it makes it easier to reach for my cell phone. Lately I have been Googling How to vids on lanyard Knots and shopping for beads and a cheap EDC work knives with a lanyard hole.

Clip AND lanyard, I was thinking only of a lanyard on a knife without a clip. I'll pass on the bead and don't like belt pouches for folders or phones.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I don't carry folders that don't have clips. All of my rotation knives that have a lanyard hole on the pocket clip side get a lanyard. I have always pulled my knives out of my pocket by their lanyard. It can be hazardous with knives with thumb plates, or other features that catch on the pocket. I have had a knife or two swing forward with an open blade . These two knots below are my favorites: a. Cobra Knot, b. Snake Knot (or Chris Reeves style). The lanyard length's range range from 1-2 inches. I tie them directly to each knife (no looping). I also cut/melt the loose ends, and don't use beads, or skulls, ect. Tying the lanyard close enough to the knife that it can't get clipped by a closing blade makes sense to me.

I was thinking of no clip and using the lanyard to get the knife. Maybe doesn't make sense. Just have to live with the RF pocket being for a knife only.

Not for me, I already have a key lanyard dangling out of my pocket, so another would just annoy me.

I hooked my lanyard to the clip because the Inexpensive knife I've been using, a SOG AEGIS FL has no lanyard hole. Turns out I liked carrying that way so now i'm looking for a new knife with one. Another excuse to buy a new knife I suppose Lol

I prefer no lanyard as they just get in the way. That said, i have owned a handful of knives with bad clip designs that get stuck on my pockets or are difficult to pull out. Lanyards were the only solution for leverage on those knives

I have a lanyard attached to my Aegis clip too.

Lol:D After losing 2 of them plus one Kershaw I figured I'd give a lanyard a try on the Aegis. I think it has to be the most underrated sub $30 dollar knife around. That thing slices like a Spyderco when it's sharp and it's a breeze to sharpen too. I just picked up another today to gift to my apprentice so he stops asking to use mine;)

I use them for two purposes:

1. For knives w/o a pocket clip (e.g. SAK Pioneer), I use a paracord lanyard with a simple overhand knot tucked under my belt to keep the knife vertical in the pocket.

2. For my 3 finger fixed blade, I use a short leather lanyard with an overhand knot to it help draw the knife and allow my pinky finger to have something to grip.

I leave them on my CRKs but don’t put them on most pocket knives.

On some very small fixed blades like my Fred Perrin Le Shark the fob is completely necessary. Having the fob on completely changes the way the knife feels in hand.

Depending on the knife like black handle and dlc blade il use a reflective or orange lanyard pull. Especially if im out in the woods or night time. It has helped me find it on one occasion. I put my knife down while using it and of course it walked 2 feet away.

I had them on my larger SAK folders but when using the tools it did get in the way so I removed them but still have one on my SAK Executive which helps draw it from my pocket.

My clipped folders tend to all have lanyards on there or what I call Bobtail fobs as they are short so I hook around them with my pinky to help draw the knife from my pocket.

And on fixed blade knives it really can help to draw the knife from the sheath too.
