Largest Fixed Blade Concealed? How Did You Do It?

Hello All,

As the title suggests, what is the largest fixed blade knife you have carried in a concealed manner? And, how did you do it? Obviously a trench coat can cover a number of sins, but what type of holster, scabbard, carrier did you use? Are there fixed blade shoulder holsters available or is this a custom shop endeavor?
I am considering buying a large tanto, but am wondering how I'm going to carry it.

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

By moving out of CA. Sorry, I just had to.

I remember seeing this bowie sheath.. by cold steel? It was just a flat sheath that went IWB, with a little knob on the top to ensure the sheath doesn't slide down your leg. Ah, here we go. http://www.rivercitysheaths.net/southern.php

I think IWB would be the most practical way to conceal, unless you want to do some sort of shoulder harness that's underneath your shirt. However, that runs the risk of the blade falling out at times, and it would be uncomfortable since your back needs to bend in almost every direction. This all depends on the size of the knife though. Or I suppose you can run a boot sheath/lower leg sheath, but that would be difficult to draw with a long knife. You'd have to pull up your pantlegs quite a bit.

From Mountain Man Leatherworks. Not that I own one myself, but if I did I'd carry something like the Down Under Outback, just so I could pull it out and say profound things like, "that's not a knife, now that's a knife."

The largest fixed blade I EDC is a Spyderco Temperance 2. I find that the G-clip and plastic sheath make it very easy to carry, even when I'm not wearing a belt. I just slip it inside my waistband and the G-clip keeps it in place. You can play with different positions for the clip.

After I lost 40+ lbs, I found that I could slide a Kabar USMC shorty (with sheath :D ) in my front pants pocket and it didn't print except when I sat down, and that was usually at a table. Then the females in my life made me buy new pants that fit better, but the knife didn't. :(

So, wear pants that are 3 sizes too big. :D :D

I sometimes carry my Esee 4 vertical, paracord lashed to my belt on my left side. Small of the back is a bit more comfortable unless I'm sitting but it sticks out the side. I'm a smaller than average dude so where I have to find a trade off between comfort and concealment, it may not even be an issuer for you.

ZT 121 is the biggest i can conceal. I wear it horizontal at the small of my back with a g-clip. Anything longer will stick out the side. I usually wear t-shirts over it. During winter, when i wear a jacket i could probably conceal something bigger. But I've got no need for a bigger knife.

A year or two ago, for whatever reason, I strapped on my CS Bushman to go across the street to get whatever size beer case. I had on a tshirt and sweatpants; I put a belt right above my hips and below my ribs, put the sheath on there, and tucked the rest into my sweatpants. It didn't seem to print and I got no weird looks. Not something I do often. :D

5.5 inch blade. Kydex clipped in waist band or a few times have made a quick shoulder holster rig with paracord.

I've never tried to conceal a really big blade, but I have had luck with smallish blades either horizontal on my belt at about 1 o'clock or IWB with a cant at about 1-2 o'clock. Look for an ambidextrous sheath with a clip, something along the lines of the Gerber Guardian or one of those really cheap fury boot daggers. Also, it would be pretty easy to conceal a knife in a kydex sheath with a shoulder holster and a little bit of modification. Have you checked out the Merc harness?

Rainwalker here on the forums made me this one a few years back. The loop can stay on the belt and the main sheath can be withdrawn which makes sitting around camp a little nicer. It rides high as well, so it's reasonably discreet. The sheath also has a retention stud so it can be worn in-waistband on its own.
