I was wondering to myself what the largest knife companies were, i thought it would probly be spyderco, benchmade crkt for the top ones but wasn't sure. I decided to google it and nothing immediately came up. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on the top 5 or 10 knife companies out there as far as size. thanks

Spyderco - ~50 employees, Benchmade - ~150, Kershaw - ~250
Victorinox - ~1000 AFAIK :)

I'm not sure those numbers are reflective of the actual workforce, especially where Spyderco is concerned. All those employees in Seki making knives for them aren't on the Spyderco payroll.

I wonder how may production workers Case has?

I'm not sure, but I think that Moki factory, where Spyderco knives are made, is separate company.

The term "largest" should be defined.

"Largest" as in total production, total sales, profits, workforce, size of manufacturing facilities, etc.

I'd think Buck would be pretty large, but I'm betting Boker is bigger on a world scale.

Vicxtorinox
Buck
Gerber
Cols Steel.

some others Like Frost Of Sweden and Frost Cutlery Would add countless thousands to the count.

China.

These are all interesting questions. Since we have some industry heavy weights here, it would be cool if they could chime in and give some perspective.

I think the definition of "largest" would have to be determined before any information could make sense. Generally, it's the gross dollars a company makes in a year that measures size, but if employee measurements are used, then the figures change. As mentioned subcontractors are not employees although many makers keep many subcontractors alive.

A walk through many of our subcontractors factories would show that we keep many employed that are not direct employees.

Sorry but Cold steel is not a turnip company, they are a knife company to me as described in the OP. Every poster adds to it until it includes everything but the kitchen sink. Many large companies sell all kinds of things that they don't make themselves. Cabelas comes to mind.;)

If you want to go by units sold, United Cutlery is in the top 3
There are soo many more geeks, nerds and non-knife people than us...
QVC, Bud-K, swap-meets

I guess i should have been smart enough to break this down into categories... how about largest companies based on
-units sold
-gross product
-in house employees
if anyone can think of other ones feel free, those were just off the top of my head, but i had completely forgotten companies like boker and victoronix! it is kinda snobbish to not want to count companies like frost cutlery but lets stick with quality/ legit brands for now

Hard to place the Numbers,

Tramontina in Brazil makes machettes to steak steak knives and Machettes are Big

Ginsu or RonCo sold millions on TV, do you have a Miracle Blade?

Case, owned with Zippo in Japan, but there are lots of collectors

Gerber, owed by Fiskar, need some scissors or a hatchet? Their Winchester line of wal mart um, stuff, is growing crappily fast

Victorinox, doesn't everybody have one, or 2....

I would worry about what you like and quality/ value for the buck. is the company to big for good customer service? does the knife have a warranty?

there is a brand I see at swap meets, flea markets and truck stops and i is name Pakistan

I woud guess that the largest knife companies would'nt be any of the above. I think makers of cheap kitchen cutlery would.
