laser cutting cost

Does anyone have a General Idea of the price (If there is any such thing) for laser cutting 20 blades or so. I haven't done blueprints yet so I can't get a quote but I'm talking about fairly small parts in the neighborhood of 6"

The steel will be simple carbon most likely 5160.

I was going to order ~9" blanks cut for me from 440C, and the quote I was given was about $90 a piece.

Just my $0.02.

Peter,

Admiral Steel. Quantity 25 for probably 20 bucks or less and that includes the cost of steel however, I suspect you would have to supply your own 5160. Last I checked 5160 was not available in flat stock. I have found 1075 to be a killer steel and they do provide that. Also check with Nick Wheeler about water jet profiling.

Rodger....you mean they're out of steel... :footinmou

Thanks everyone.

Rodger, is the Jet profiling less expensive. What I'm working on could be cast or for that matter just profiled on a mill. $20.00 each puts it way over budget. Just a hint...look for a few historically correct bladed pistols in the future.

Beats me but don't expect water jet would be any less. Pistol knives? What are trying to do; put my buddy Bruce B. out of business!!!!

Bruce creates ART. I create shootable bladed objects. I think he's pretty safe! ;)

Call Admiral steel and ask for Antoine Davis. He handles the knife steel and blade cutting.I had 100 blades cut in ATS-34,in 20 patterns, and three thicknesses. They ranged from 6" to 18" and the total for cutting, steel, and shipping was only $1400.00 I would guess it would be pretty reasonable to cut 20 small pieces from one pattern,in one size of steel.Don't know about sheet 5160.I know they stock it in 13/64 and 1/4 up to 2.5" wide.Call Antoine.

well my boss just asked me to grind three chef knives. one for me one for him and one for the other chef there. he said all i have to do is call and have the blanks cut and he'll pay for the steel. what do you guys think? should i have them cut or should i just profile them myself?

Admiral sells 5160 flat stock. In fact, that's the only way they sell it. Got it in 13/64, and 1/4".

Edited to add; I just saw where someone above said the same thing. Sorry!

Mike S. - having it laser-cut is not an advantage until over 20 pieces.

I had a nice chit-chat with Admiral at the bladeshow about this very subject. There is a $100 setup fee no matter how many you do. Then it's about $5-10 per piece depending on how complicated. The steel is the cheapest part at $2-3 each.

I have priced over a dozen patterns with Admiral, and even at 20 pieces could not make them economical. So, I'm back to profiling them myself - hence the recent bandsaw venture.

IIRC....the more complicated, the more expensive. You are actually charged for the time the machine is "in operation"....start-to-finish. The "per blade" cost is just that number divided by the yield (number of blades). So, if the laser spends twice as much time cutting out your fancy, curly bowie...compared to the other dude's straight-up tanto....then...you'll get nailed with the extra cost.

Peter - they do have flat 5160 in stock....unless my eyes are lying to me....:D

In fact... they have flat 52100 too....been meaning to get some....

Peter Thanks for the compliment but my stuff shoots too.

I used to spend hundreds for water cutting and decided to make "one of a kind" I wasnt always happy with the results as the parts werent exactly like my drawings. You should look into buying a waterjet or a lazer cutter to buy or put together. Or You may be able to write the programs yourself to save some money for small parts. They may allow it.

Admiral does have 5160 flatstock. I just recieved 21 feet of 1/4" x 1 1/4" about a week ago. That is the smallest amount you can order. It was shipped cut into three 7 foot pieces. Cost to Maryland was about $90.00 shipped.

Admiral has .375 max laser cutting capabilities if that makes any differance.
