For any of you Latin and Holy Grain fans....
I always wondered what the heck those monks were chanting.
Any ideas? (is it actually latin?)
Thanks.

Pie Iesu Domine. Dona Eis Requiem. Its something like "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest."

I have no idea what this HOLY GRAIL is, but is the "Latin" anything like this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Requiem

It includes a reference to
The Pie Jesu combines paraphrases of the final verse of the Dies Iræ and the Agnus Dei.

Pie Iesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Dona eis requiem sempiternam.
("O sweet Lord Jesus, grant them rest; grant them everlasting rest.")

Darn... I was hoping it was something funny. Thanks.
(Or is it funny, and am I missing something... maybe it's funny because they're not allowing themselves rest by hitting themselves? )

Mr. Murnax is basically correct.

The monks in the movie are hitting themselves, flagellation, with the prayer that their suffering will be creditted to the departed as merit thus helping the departed enter heaven from purgatory.

Monty Python makes too much sense now, watching it will never be the same. Haha.

Back when I first saw The Grail many years ago, that was a laugh-out-loud scene to a Catholic-raised guy who started out with Latin masses and two years of obligatory Latin in high school.

First the chanting, punctuated by the "clunk" sounds, then the view of the monks, and finally you realized they were whacking themselves in the head... Great stuff.

That flick is hillarious!!!
"I fart in your general direction"
"I told them we already got one"
