Has anyone been hiking/camping in the LBJ Grasslands in the Decatur, Texas area? I'm looking for a place to go on a 5+ mile hike plus overnight camp. I would prefer minimal human contact - just want to get back to the woods and my first camping trip in many years.

Thanks,
Paul

You can find lots of remote areas there as most folks don't get far from their car especially thru the week. If you park at the horse-man gate across from the road to the lake you can walk in about a mile and the probability is you will be alone. In fact any place you cant drive to will not have many people. The horse people are on the horse trails a lot on the week ends. Dove season is about to crank up and that will put a lot more people out there. I have spent so much time out there my wife is going to have me cremated and my ashes scattered there-before I die LOL

I know a lot of people that hunt waterfowl in that area to. I am not sure if you can hunt deer on the LBJ Grasslands, but if you can, you are not going to want to be hiking out there during the season. Every experience I have ever had with public land deer hunting has been an accident waiting to happen. A bunch of yahoos with guns and bows running around shooting at anything that moved.

Check - No tromping through the grasslands during deer season! Good advice!

What road do I take to get to the "horse-man" gate?

Thanks,
Paul

Check out a map. There used to be a trail that led to the west side of the creek that feeds the lake. Some nice trails and sites there. The east side of the creek is where the public area is. Picnic tables etc. The south side of the lake has or maybe had a nice grove of big pines. Not real common in TX. I havent been there in 25+ years but it sure brings back memories. I accidentally shot myself in the leg with an old single action revolver while camping there and my soon to be wife got a quick lesson in how to drive a 3 on the tree standard transmission in my old Dodge p.u. on the way to the Decatur hospital .The Sheriff showed up and asked us if she had shot me.---Be careful during hunting season and there used to be a lot of rattlesnakes there.---Have fun!---KV

I'm looking at the map and see more than one lake. I see Clear Lake, Black Creek Lake, Cottonwood Lake, Rhodes Lake, Chicken Lake, and Rucker Pond!

LBJ Grasslands Map

On the map, which areas are public - the gray or white?

Thanks,
Paul
