Hi all! I usually hang out in shop talk, but am interested in leatherwork and really appreciate all the knowledge shared here! I have made a few sheaths and other leather craft projects...but all this stuff is pretty new to me. I was hoping to get instructions on his to build a leatherman case. I'm sure it's probably pretty simple, but I want to make sure I don't screw up. Thank you in advanced!

al stohlaman has a real good book out. it's 3 seris called how to make leather cases. The first volume is a good one , it teaches smaller cases and sheaths. I own it and often make reference to it , I highly suggest it.

There's some good youtube videos showing how to go about a leatherman sheath.

cheers

Nic, look at Ian Atkinson's videos on Youtube. Here is the one where he makes a case for Leatherman Wave. All his videos are have tons of useful information. If you prefer reading "The Art of Making Leather Cases" books by Al Stohlman that grumpy_grinder suggested are really good.

I make lots of different leatherman cases in three different styles. Do you have any specific questions?

Thanks for the input guys
Horsewright: I wanted to make one similar to the ones that come with the wave...it had the flap that snaps and keeps the tool in. Do you make it one piece and fold it? Or is it multiple pieces sewn together. I was going to saddle stitch it, is there a better way or will that work?

For years I wore a surge in this sheath that I bought from my local rural supply shop .
I never bothered to make my own Surge sheath because quite honestly this mass produced one performed perfectly , so why bother .

But I started playing with Beltless sheaths and that meant that the Leatherman started getting left at home .
So I made a couple of Beltless Wave sheaths ( the Surge borders on to heavy for Beltless in my opinion ) and they seem to work well on the occasions I've worn them .

That's nice. The one I'm looking at making would be vertical, but otherwise similar in design. Could you please list a few steps you followed to make that one? It's a present for my uncle...he wore holes in the case that it came with; I thought it would be nice to make a handmade one.

Nic none of mine have the flap and snap. Not necessary. Here's the three different ones I make:

The middle pic while showing a pocketknife can easily be adapted to a leatherman. So the top one sounds like the closest to what you are looking for. Two piece construction, welt all the way around the tool, skivved to zero except at the bottom edge and the top.

I assume the OP meant leather, but Id like to make a case for Kydex (see what I did there:D;)).
Here is a Kydex case or holster for a Leatherman.

Kidding and Kydex aside, there are plenty of good vids on the tube in regards to holsters of either leather or Kydex aside from the excellent advice one can glean from this subforum.

Those are Leatherman Raptor EMS/trauma shears, but now that you asked, it could certainly look like that:)

Nic go to Makers Leather Supply web site. He has a great pattern pack from Slickbald Custom leather for Multi tools /folding knives.

Thank toh all for the suggestions! I'm not a kydex person:). Call me old fashioned, but I like leather.

Leather certainly can be better looking and if made right can get even better looking with use/age IMO.
Kydex is just so very practical.
So far Ive made more leather sheaths than Kydex holsters/sheaths.
