The cap on my 40+ year old Echo chainsaw leaks out of the vent hole in the oil cap. It's done it for a while. It's not a big deal, its just messy. Any home remedy to restore the seal so I don't have to spend $20 on a new cap?

It's building pressure in there. Try cleaning the channel from the oil chamber to the bar with a fine wire. Maybe clean out the vent hole too. KV

I'll give it a shot but it leaks even when its off and still comes out on the bar. I think the seals shrunk. I should just get the new cap but I'm too cheap.

My husky has a rubber O-ring around base of cap. My dad has same saw only older and his was leaking. I got an o-ring at local hardware store. Replaced it and leak stopped. If your not already running bar and chain oil, switch to it. It’s thicker oil and may stay inside better.

What other kind of oil do people put in there?

Just store it so the cap is upright.

That's what I do now. But the sun hits it and it heats up and the oil oozes out of the vent and makes the whole saw sticky. I know, first world problems

Don’t get me started lol. I’ve seen gear oil all weights, motor oil new and used, etc. I only use bar chain oil myself , sounds like you do too :-)
One thing to check is the threads. See if they are clean of debri on plug and fill hole.
If nothing else it’s time for a new fill cap.

They must go through a lot of bars.

Gear oil isn’t so bad, but stinks and makes a mess. The other oils cause a disaster. Bar & chain issues , sling like crazy, excessive heat. One of my friends does this and saws only last couple years tops.
