Leather for sheath from Hobby lobby?

Hey Folks,
While in Hobby Lobby one day, I saw some leather they had there. They had a bag of scraps and some sheets. Most of this stuff was very flexible, like a t shirt.

On their website, they have "tooling leather" listed. "8 1/2 x 11, vegetable tanned tooling cowhide." $8.99 Probably expensive, but is this the correct type of leather for sheaths?

Is the correct leather for sheaths available in stores like Jo Anne Fabrics or any other store I might find in a decent size city or town? I'm always going through towns like Pensacola Fla, Mobile Ala and other towns out to New Orleans La. Any stores that you might be able to recommend between here and New Orleans?
Thanks for any help offered
Rob

I buy a lot of stuff from tandy leather, but some people swear by wickett and craig.

Mr Bailey, Thanks for the names of the companies.

Church&son, Thanks for the link. Haven't seen that forum before. I really don't venture out of shop talk much at all. This place is huge! I don't want to get lost. :D

I have got some of that from hobby lobby. you have to look around for the right bags. but some of it is vegy. tand. If you can only aford $5 at the time it is a good way to go.

I used the hobby lobby sheets and its tandy brand BUT its not up to par then when i ordered a double shoulder from tandy. Its thinner and doesn't seem to accept dye as well for some reason. Not to mention its 2-3x as expensive. !5 square feet double shoulder from tandy was 60$.

That 8 x 11 piece that Hobby Lobby sells is 3/4oz and too thin for a sheath in a single thickness. If you double it, it will be closer to what you want for a good, sturdy sheath.

They usually always have a 40% off coupon going at this link:
http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/coupon.cfm

Or, if you have a decent cell phone go to:
mobile.hobbylobby.com and pull up the coupon there, the cashier will ring the code without having to print up the coupon.

You can pick up one of those sheets to practice with, then when you feel you are ready, I would order up a 12x12 or 12x24 piece of 8/9oz leather from texasknife.com, jantzsupply.com, or usaknifemaker.com.

After that, if you think you want to continue the craft of leatherwork, then you can move to larger pieces like single and double shoulders and sides. You will get better prices on larger pieces, but there is no sense buying 15 square feet of leather to get that price if you don't enjoy doing it. :)

Thanks for the additional replies and suggestions guys. I've been away from a computer for a few days or wold have replied sooner. I may get a piece or two from them just to see if I like doing the leather work or not.

I love it, after my 'reawakening' from my Boy Scout days, I was hooked. I've tried unsuccessfully for several years to find a hobby I enjoy that could also be profitable. I have finally found it with leatherworking and (currently) making knives from blanks.

I find leatherworking to be very relaxing.

I made this very simple leather over Kydex sheath from the Tandy leather scraps at hobby lobby. (link below, scroll to bottom)

You will get a few types in the scraps, veg tanned, chrome tanned, and batch dipped waxed leather. You don't want to use the chrome tanned, it burns green; the other two more of a blackish. This sheath is the waxed leather which I cut, shaped and burnished.
