I received a leatherman super tool for either my 18th birthday (1993) or my 21st birthday (1996) I was wondering if someone could help me age my leatherman. It's never been used.

what an amazing display of self control.
nib !!!
especially for something that has
gone out of production too.
rip super leatherman 1994 - 2001 :-)
fyi , leatherman started stamping dates in 1992.
"most" leatherman's have year codes/dates stamped inside of the handles.
of which, the first two digits signify month
and the last two the year of production.
hope this helps!

Thanks mate so from that info it was my 21st birthday present :)
I can't seem to see a date stamp in it but guessing from my location in outback New South Wales Australia, I'd say it wasn't hot off the press in 1996. So it would have to be a 94 or 95 model.
If warranty was from when it was bought I have one year left
Thanks again mate
Dan.

advocating the use of a magnifying aid
and some angled lighting.
at times the stampings can be
rather faint and fine lined.

though you might have a rare one which might have somehow slipped pass the
crucial dating stamp put in there for verifying the timeframe of any possible warranty.
key production changes on a supertool
'95 - hard wire notch added
(has larger plier pivot)
'96 - clip point blade replaces sabre blade
(smaller plier pivot).

I'm glad I looked at this thread. I've always wondered how old my super tool was as it was given to me second or even third hand. Mine is dated 0595. Thanks. Sometimes it's just good to know stuff.
Oh that's kind of sad your warranty has run out :). I still have 2 weeks :thumbsup:

yeah its amazing just how many folks
do not know about the existance of
the year stamp
so glad that the age old mystery is solved!
not hinting at anything in particular ;-)
but sone guys do really seem to have
all the luck when it comes to warranties...

Interesting about the date stamps. I bought this Cabelas labeled PST a couple of years ago at a flea market for $20. It appeared unused and has a date of 0794. But my original PST I bought on the ship store in the Marines, floating around the Persian Gulf in 1991, has no stamp. As indicated above the dates started in 92.

honestly never knew this about the rebar...

"...,The Rebar come out in 2012 ....

Versions
  • The plier head had a few slight modifications in mid or late 2015.
  • The first Rebars came out with datecodes but due to the fact that the stamping was coming through the handles the datecodes were not put on later models.
  • The file on the Rebar has undergone a change as well. It went from an angled end to a flat end file sometime in it's production but would be hard to pinpoint when due to no datecodes now. .....
Variations
  • There is the stainless steel version and the black oxide version. The Rebar does not have date codes but has numbers and letters stamped inside of the handles...."
