Leatherman Supertool Replacement.

The main blade, file, and saw on my Leatherman Supertool (original Supertool) along with one of the screw drivers are either worn beyond usefulness or they're broken off. There's also part of the frame of the Supertool that broke not long after I bought it new a long time ago but I just lived with it.

My question is, if I send this tool in for repair/replacement, and they decide to replace it, what do you think they will replace it with? The new Leatherman tools in my old tools price range when I bought it is the Sudekick which I do not like.

Also. If they choose not to replace or repair it, what do you think I should buy to replace this? The original Supertool is no longer made, and the Supertool 300 that they have now is huge and bulky compared to my old one.

Thanks.

I believe the ST300 is the substitute, but why not ask them with a phone call? They are rather friendly people, IME

I actually didn't think of that. I sent a few emails and got kind of a generic response and so I was debating spending the money on sending it in vs just saving up for a Wave.

Leatherman is above and beyond amazing with their products and customer service! I would imagine a ST 300 would be your replacement. I EDC the rebar even though I own a Surge, Wave, and several others. I carried the surge for a few years, i sent it in and when it came back I couldn't do the weight anymore. So in the two weeks it was gone I bought a Wave, Rebar, and sidekick (yes i have issues) I really like the rebar now! I work on machines so I like the thinner profile and reduced weight. Nothing against the Surge or Wave. Especially because you can swap out tools quickly and effectively. But I work in a huge shop full off tools. So having the basics with locking tools and replaceable wire cutters it's perfect.

I'd jump on the big auction site, search for Leatherman Super Tool and bid on an auction or two. That's what I did when they replaced my Original Waves with New Waves. I'm watching an auction right now that has an original Super Tool going pretty cheap.

Grab a Leatherman Core if you get a chance (long discontinued).

I've collected pretty much every model that Leatherman has produced, and as I downsized, the Core remained as the standalone tool among the larger 4.5" models.

What is it about the Core you prefer, as compared to the other Super Tool varieties?

I love the Leatherman Charge Titanium. I love it. Use it everyday in maintenance at work, backpacking and all around.

Thanks for the replies. I sent it in and am probably getting the Supertool 300. That's ok. I like the Surge a lot though because it has good scissors and a fine file that can be removed and switched with a saw. I like the Charge al because of the 154cm blade but it's not worth the extra $50 over the Surge to me. Maybe I'll sell the Supertool and buy the Surge.

Its not just the bladeit is the robistness of the tool.

This Super Tool was my pliers based multitool EDC for nine years. During that time Leatherman and Vic introduced new and/or improved versions, but the ST was at my sweet spot for utility and size. I recognized that some advances had been made, but the ST had served well enough that I saw no real need to upgrade. Besides, none of them really appealed to me. However, I eventually got around to noticing the Charge Ti. It solved the awkward blade unlocking drill with the Super Tool and provide increased versatility with compact accessory kits. I was also pretty sold on one hand blade opening as not only a convenience but safety measure when working on a ladder, and the Charge weighed even less than the ST. So I made the switch, retiring my 9 year daily companion. It was actually a wrench ;):D. We had been through so much together. Nostalgia; who'd have thought?
However, I've never regretted doing so. It was for the right reasons. Every once in a while, I haul out the old thing, play with it a bit, then put it away again. You can't go back.

That right there^^^^^^^ I had an original Super tool and lost it, I found one at the big auction place for $10 shipped and I bought another at a yard sale for $5, gave one to my daughter's boyfriend and I kept the other one. They're still out there and they're cheap.

I don't use mine as much as when I went to work every day. But it is very capable, great sheath with the driver set, and I keep it by my desk, not hidden away.

When I go someplace with a multitool, though, it's usually the Swisstool Spirit.

I had a Surge which was great but too heavy to carry around. Traded it.

I'm sorry to say I've never tried the Swisstool, I wish I woulda picked one up when they first came out. I have my Supertool and a Skeletool, between the two and with a bit set I can take most stuff apart. ;)

Some years ago I did try both the Swisstool and the Spirit. There's much to admire about them, and I can understand how so many people get sold on the Swisstool and/or its baby brother, but after a few months I went back to my Super Tool. Maybe by then I was just used to it, but it suited me better than the Swiss. Also, the pliers jaws opened wider, screwdrivers better sized and sharper cut, was better shaped for a fist load for if needed (once, but didn't actually come to blows) and I liked the sound it made when closing the handles.

I flip my Supertool open and closed one handed like a butterfly knife, that's what sold me over the Gerber or SOG.

I've owned several large Leatherman tools, and the old OST is still my favorite. I bought an OST here in 2014, and the previous owner had Leatherman replace the plain-edge & serrated knife blades, the file and the saw blade. So, as of late 2014, Leatherman still had these parts on hand. You might be able to get your original tool back; if you do get a ST300, and trade it for the Surge, be aware that the Surge is heavy. The Surge has an amazing tool layout, with replaceable blades & driver bits, but IIRC mine weighed in at 11.5oz., as opposed to 9oz. for the OST.

If folks are interested, here's a thread from earlier this year, where I asked who still carried & used their OST. I was surprised at how much love the old OST still gets.
