Leek EDC Question

I pulled the trigger on one of Kershawguy's composite Leek blems, and I want some input from other members as to whether to carry it with the lock on or off. I edc a skyline, needs work and an od-1 right now. (Kershaw rocks!) I always carry tip-down, for fear a knife partially opening in my pocket could cause a REALLY nasty wound. It seems the lock position on these would make it awkward or nearly impossible to use one-handed. I carry clipped in my right front pocket, (when my P3AT isn't there). Then, the knife is clipped backwards in my left front pocket. Any experience with a non-locked AO knife trying to open in your pocket?

I did hear one story of a leek opening on someone and popping them good. However, I have a buddy who has carried one for some time unlocked and never had it get him.

For the record I won't carry the blur or similar knives because they don't lock, and I cut myself real good on one once.

When I used to carry a chive, I had it open in my pocket before.. Then I started using the lock

Looks like I'll have to wait and see how strong the detent is when it arrives. The thought of a knife as sharp as that open in my pocket makes my hair stand up! Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

If you carry it in your right front pocket, tip up, it will not open. The blade rests against the back seam of your pocket. Carrying like this I have never had a Leek, or any other knife, accidentally open in my pocket.

And I also tighten the lock in the off position.

The smaller Chive has a hair trigger, so I tend not to carry that one.

But I have carried two Leeks in EDC, and never had one open on me. It does take some force to trigger the Speed Safe on the Leek, so I don't worry.

I was hoping it would be like my needs work and take a determined nudge to open. I'd rather not change clip positions as to carry position. The first thing I did with the od-1 was move the clip for tip-down carry. Ah, freedom!

I always carried my Leek with the lock on. I think all this one-handed, lightning quick draw knife access is a little overblown and unrealistic. Of course there might be times when quick one-handed access is important, even life saving. But honestly, how often do those situations present themselves? I would venture so far as to say that since the inception of folding knives, there have been very few people who've lost their lives or someone or something valuable because they couldn't draw their pocket knife fast enough.

I have had a leek in my pocket for years. the lock was broken and my friends told me to get it fix. I have not bothered because I have never had it open in my pocket yet.

I've had 3 leeks, took the lock off of all of them, carried all of them tip down right front pocket. Never had a problem, and I ain't scared. Love that knife.

+1.

Same here. The Leek has been a favourite edc knife of mine and I've never carried it with the lock in the 'on' position, at least never intentionally. Never had a problem with it opening in my pocket, either.

NO LOCK. I find them annoying. I have 3 different Leeks and have carried them as EDC's for years. Never had a problem.
I would guess someones activities, clothing, location ,etc. might make a lock necessary, but not for me.

I've given Scallions & Leeks to family members & have actually taken the lock off so it won't accidentally be activated.

As stated, carrying tip-up, the blade would open against the seam vs tip-down, where it can open up & when/if you put your hand in your pocket...ouch.

In fact, the only knives I've poked myself with have been tip-down ones that opened in my pocket.

I suppose the lock has its use, but it's not for me. The Leek is a very good smallish folder. Nice & slim, but with a 3" blade. Nice choice & welcome to the Forums.

I've carried a Leek- tip down, in right front pocket for years without it accidentally opening. Only accidental (and embarrassing) opening has been when dropped on the floor.

Hi foldinghunter -

I tighten the lock down in the "unlocked" position so it will not accidentally lock in my pocket.

I have never had a leek deploy accidentally.

Congrats on the composite leek from kershawguy - those are a great deal and a beautiful knife for edc.

best regards -

What he said, except I remove the lock entirely because the slot makes one hell of a bottle opener ;)

I also had reserves with carrying my leek tip up. So I carry it tip down in my front, left/weak side with the blade against the back liner of the pockets. And I tightened the lock down in the off position. This gives me peace of mind and I only loose maybe a split second when deploying it. People can tell you they've carry tip up for years without incident but all it takes is that one time to be sorry.

Locked and deep pocket carry (no clip).

An ounce of prevention . . . ;)

W/o a clip in the bottom of my pocket, I'd use the lock too. I tested my Leek by tossing it up in the air and across the living room and letting it hit the carpeted floor. I tossed it down the hallway too and couldn't get it to open.

It did pop open once but it ticked against the edge of the dining room table and I believe it was a fluke and actually hit the thumbstud or the flipper by accident.

Speed SAFE! Tip up carry w/o lock.
