I have noticed that here on the for sale forum most people say that you have to be of legal age to buy a knife. Here in IL there is no legal knife purchasing age, I have been buying knives by myself since I was nine. What are the legal ages in your area, or are there any? Be sure to post the area in which you live.

So why was this posted in General? It is about law rather than knives. Please reserve General Knife Discussion for knife discussion and knife laws is the place for law discussion.

It's true that most states don't have a legal age to buy knives, but when your talking online transactions it might more be a matter of "legal age to have your own bank account and credit cards." and/or "legal age to enter into an contractual agreement."

in MA, i think its technically 16.
Perhaps, but most MA dealers will not sell to anyone under the age of 18. In fact, WalMart and KMart have 18 years of age as their corporate policy for knife sales. It seems like it was always that way. When I was 17 and living in Lawrence (back in 1978), I attempted to buy a Gerber FS II lockblade folder from a local firearms dealer. The dealer refused to sell it to me. The older brother of one of my friends agreed to make the purchase for me.

I am 16 and i have no problems buying knives at the local knife shop or at cabelas, but wal-mart is a different story. I honestly do not see the danger of having a knife than accidentaly cutting yourself. How often does one hear about a knife fight aming teens? Not very often.

Accidentally cutting yourself is exactly the point. We live in a super litigious society where lawsuits happen all the time. Certain stores just have that policy in place to prevent parents from suing the store if the kid hurts himself or someone else. It happens. But again, store policy is not law.

And yes, stabbings among teens do happen with pocket knives. There was a girl in my state who put an Applegate-Fairbairn folder into another girls heart. She got Murder 2 and 10 years.

There are few bad seeds out there, no doubt. But there is no reasonwhy these stores, as well astho government have to controll everything we can and cant have

In Texas, there is no minimum age for buying a legal knife. Many a young Scout looks forward to earning the priveledge to buy their first knife.

However; if you want to buy a knife longer than 5 1/2 inches, such as a large hunting knife, then you need to be over 18.

I was under the impression that it was 18 here in NM, since they recently asked for my i.d. at a sporting goods store when I was buying a few knives, but when I was about 16 I went to a local gun show and bought a dual action OTF with no trouble. What makes this even weirder is that NM law states that it's illegal to buy, sell, or possess autos...

The behavior and statements of merchants and stores is possibly the worst source for accurate knife laws. Stores can ask for ID even if there is no law, and gun shows get away with murder on their knife sales, due to the focus of the authorities being aimed elsewhere.

Illegal to sell or carry switchblades in TN too (cept LEO/military/EMT), but plenty of the cheapos at gun shows sold to general public. And cops are both security and customers; never a word said.

But don't get caught with one in your back pocket other times.

Yeah...hypocrites piss me off. If it's such a beneficial tool for public servants to use, then why would it not be equally beneficial for the public themselves?
