Legality of carrying a fixed blade while camping and hiking?

I don't know too many knife laws, and it wasn't until relatively recently that I got my first fixed blade knife, so I did not have too much to worry about. I usually carry my Kabar knife when I am out in the woods, but I was wondering about the legality of it. I know that in most states where I usually hike, I would have to open carry a fixed blade. Does that change if I have a good use for it(hiking or camping). Would I be able to put it in my pack while hiking and not get in trouble for it even though it might be considered concealed? I am just wondering because sometimes I go where there are other people, and open carry is not always a good option. People tend to get scared if I walk down a path with a 7 inch blade on my side.

I don't think any police officer would bother me if I had it in my pack, but I would like to know the legality of it just in case I meet one who is not so nice.

Thanks.

Oh, and most of my hiking is done in CA(los Angeles and Ventura area) and Utah (Provo and Salt Lake city).

You know this is not the the best answer, but the way I feel is, if it is in your pack than nobody will know about it. Even if you are at your campsite, nobody will know, unless there is other people there and even then I doubt they will say anything as long at it goes back in your pack when you are done with it.

I beleive when they are talking concealed they are talking about it being on your person under some clothing and not in your pack which is on your back.

Ok, thanks for the response. I wasn't sure because many states seem to put fixed blades into the same category as guns, and I am pretty sure that a gun in your pack would still be considered concealed.

I can't think of a reason why a police officer would search my pack when I am in the middle of the wilderness, so I don't think I would run into any trouble.

In my experience, you can carry anything you want in the woods, openly or concealed, in regards to blades, as long as simple possession of the blade(s) in question is not outlawed in your state (as is the case with automatics here in Illinois). Want to carry a sword? Carry a sword. :D

Not usually. I don't think I would ever run into a officer in the back woods. I would just like to know if legally it is ok, not that I would change.
It seems kinda weird how it would be illegal to carry one in my pack, but as soon as I take it out and hold it or put it on my belt it is perfectly fine.

really, unless you're wearing a dirty hockey mask nobody's gonna complain about you carrying a fixed blade in the woods

how many officers go looking for knife-wielding woodsmen?

*edit* how many would confront said woodsman?

Most states have knife carrying 'exceptions' for hunting, fishing, camping, 'outdoor activities', etc. But always look up your own state's statutes.

+1

while my state doesn't prohibit the open carry of a FB, it does choose to trample on my right to open carry a firearm (off duty). however, we have a (hunting/camping) exception for open carry of firearms, so it stands to reason that other states would have the same for their fixed blade laws.
