Hi all!

I just got in 100ft. of paracord and it is a bit too long I think.

What lengths does everyone keep in their packs while camping?

25 feet is small enough to take anywhere, 50 feet is a good amount to stick in a small pack, IMO.

ETA, 2-50 foot lengths can be less cumbersome than a 100 ft length. Chances of needing 1 piece more than 50 feet long are pretty slim.

100 ft isn't bad, but you are not going to need 100 ft all at once. I take my cord and cut (and burn the ends) down to four 25 ft hanks.

I probably carry seven 25 ft hanks of paracord when I'm on over-nighters, for my tarp and what not.

50 ft works fine for me. Usually chop it down according to what i need it for. Thats just what works for me.

There are a couple schools of thought on this but I don't cut my paracord (after the initial split up of course) unless I really have to.

So cutting down your 100 ft before you go out makes it more manageable.

If you cut it to 5-20 ft lengths you get to have some extra if you use 4 while hanging a tarp...

just a thought.

Tie some lanyards on every implement, axe, fixed blades, folder, make a key ring one. You can easily get anywhere from 5 to 10 feet of extra cord in a lanyard if you tie it right, even more in a bracelet so make some survival bracelets using buckle snaps from one of the sources on the net. http://www.itwnexus.com/side-release-buckles.php

Keep in mind also that para cord has the numerous white inner strands. In a pinch you can pull those out and literally gain access to multiples of small ties for any number of things. Some of those things can be done with just one of those and actually be plenty strong such as tying two sticks together with multiple wraps just to keep one in place where thats all it does. Its also plenty strong enough to make bird traps or make supports for weaving pine branches or straw for make shift doors to cover a shelter should you not have a pack to cover it.

In my medium ruck I carry 100' & a role of gorilla tape....Takes less than a third of a pouch..........

I don't really measure them, but I'd guess I keep most of my lengths to about 12 feet. I probably take about 4 to 10 of them with me depending on my mood. If you're hanging food, I'd keep one length of at least 50 feet on you. I usually take about 25-30 feet of burned (wasted) climbing rope with me as well. It'd not really needed, but I like to hitch up logs and drag them back to camp whole...then cut them at leisure throughout the day. tossing a timber hitch on a 20 foot log makes it infinitely easier to drag than just shouldering it.

And remember, paracord is cheap. It's much more useful if you consider it disposable.

I keep 2-25 foot hanks in the pouch with my poncho. Usually that's it.

If I'm going to be out for longer I'll take a 100 ft bundle.

I've taken a whole 300 foot spool, but that was when we were doing a wilderness class.
