This is a pattern that we don't see here as much as some others. I suspect it's one of those styles that does not appeal to some folks because of it's size or unique characteristics. On the other hand, I suspect a lot of you probably really like this pattern just because it has so much charisma.

With the recent release of the Case/Bose collaboration of this pattern, I thought it might be fun to see what you fellows have to share, and maybe discuss the history of this pattern.

I'll start with a couple. I still have the barbwire Case, but I let the 1977 Blue Scroll one get away (duh).

I let a Case Blue Scroll swing guard escape my clutches as well.

I hate to post this poor scan of an older Henckels swing guard after Ford's clear photos:

Mike,you have some vintage beauties!

When I was in the Navy, a few years ago ;) I had a nice case swing guard knife
short story, we had a guy that was a black belt karate type fellow, nice enough
but was pretty big on himself, I think he watch too many of those episodes of
Kung Fu, as he heard that I could throw a knife pretty well.
He asked me to throw my knife at him, and he would brush it aside as it came at him!
He was dead serious, of course I wasn't about to do that, but asked him to observe
me as I threw my knife. I would grip the blade, knife is still closed at this point,
and as I drew my arm backwards for the throw, that motion would flip the handle
open and lock the blade out and then I'd throw the knife with a 1 1/2 turn through
the air, about 12 feet away I stuck it into the end of a 2x4 of our bunks in the barracks
in Philly Navy shipyard, our ship was being built at the time so we were in a barracks there.

After he saw me throw the knife and see it fly and stick deep into the wood,
he just said, 'you threw that fast!' and I said, that's how you do it, did you still want
me to throw my knife at you? he just shook his head no. I miss that knife, darn good
thrower! :)

Here are three of my swinguards, first a Canal Street Cutlery Swinguard, followed by two
1983 NKCA Case Swinguards, I love the shape of this blade.

Wow! You folks are showin' some really great looking examples of the swing guard here. Beautiful pictures as well.

2toes, that Bose custom is awesome.

Gary, that was a cool anecdote of one of your Navy days. I appreciate you sharing it. A fitting story for the swing guard, which to me has sort of a folksytac charm.

Many of you here (probably most of you) know a lot more than I do about traditional patterns. I'd like to hear more about the history or development of the swing guard pattern if some of you feel like sharing.

Keep it going guys, great stuff!

And Happy New Years to you all. :)

A couple more...:)

Here is one I found earlier this week. Where'd I find it? In the Super-Duper Sale display cabinet at Sheperd Hills Cutlery.

Relative to the two I posted above, this Case is quite a bit better built than the Canal Street, not as silky-smooth as the AG Russell, and less than half the price of either.

WHOOA, You guys have been holding out on those swing guards. I really like them all, so thanks for that!. I used to own more but most all of them are sold off or traded..:(

Here is a smaller Case SW(3 1/2 inches closed)I got for my Daughter last year. She picked it out herself. We were at Bass Pro Shoppes in Ft. Lauderdale having dinner and shopping on a Father/Daughter date. You know the kind, where you show your Daughter how she is supposed to be treated by the male of the species while out on a date.. Anyway, out of the entire display of Case knives this is the pattern and model she chose.. Great pocket size this..
