Hi, we're having a debate at our house over whether these are letter openers or daggers. What do you think?

I say daggers just because it looks like both sides of the knife have bevels. Usually with most letter openers one side is flat and unground. Of course, I am no expert on this matter :-)

I Know,I Know,I Know,I Know,I Know,
They are daggers that can be used as letter openers or letter openers that can be used as daggers.

Nice Work, BTW.

These blades have bevels on both sides and are ground out of A2. Rc-58.
All have African black wood on one side. The show sides are Ivory, abalone and woolly Mammoth tooth. ( the Ivory one is flipped over )
None are sharpened yet, I first have to go Buy a box of band aides :D
The last one not finished yet has a carved Mother of pearl and pink ivory flower on the front and African Black wood on the back.
Mothers Day Dagger???;)

If they are not sharpened, they are letter openers........they will magically become daggers when sharpened.

letter openers
they have no provision for preventing the hand from sliding onto the blade in the event that a strong thrust meets resistance, if you sharpen them they will be more effective letter openers

I showed my wife who works in an office and she said letter openers.
we both play in a medieval recreation goup and see (and I make) daggers.
those are very beautiful letter openers

I don't care which they are, they're damn fine looking!!!!!!
Must have been a nightmare to grind those things, especially near the tip!
Beautiful work Dave!!!

Hi L6,
The Tip was really intense to grind. So intense that my left index finger which was wrapped in gauze protective finger tape caught on fire and I didn't notice it until the flame was a inch tall and my finger got burnt.
The finger went into the cooling bucket to put out the fire.
I guess I was a LITTLE FIXATED on the grind!!!!!!!!

They're beauts for sure! I'm not a good reference point for your question. I often call the railroad spike knives my high school blacksmith students make "letter openers." (Keeps the teenagers-making-knives controversy at bay, somewhat!)

Hi Dave, Beautiful work. If you are selling them in Connecticut they are daggers, but in Mass or NY double edge are illegal so then they obviously are letter openers. Kevin

We've got some double sided letter openers here. Actually, I can't think of one I've ever seen that was single sided. I say they are whatever you label them. Some here might remember "Brass Knuckle Paperweights".

If they were mine, I'd label them Art Letter Openers or Daggers, because either one of those names should sell for more than just "letter openers" ;)

Both ...

It's a letter opener when you open that tax form in the background ...

... then it's a dagger as you're seized by the sudden need to stab something.;)

When I make them I call them letter knives. I make the edges sharp so it can be used to cut open packages, cut string, and other such "desk" tasks. A letter opener is a simple (usually unhardened) ripping tool. A letter knife is a decorative functional desk knife used to cut open letters and packages.
Letter opener - $5-10
Letter knife - $50-100

double edges are not illegal in New York State, the city may be different. I have looked at the NewYork State weapons laws, and had several cops I know try to find the apparently mythical prohibitions on double edges, and blades over 4 1/2 inches.
there are a whole lot of things they sell at the oriental stores at the mall that are illegal, but double edges ar not a condition for something being illegal in its own right
