Hello everyone,

I was scrolling through webshops, trying to find a new folder, when I stumbled upon Cutleryshoppe, where I found nutnfancy hall of fame section.

So I see something orange with the back of my eye, and look, it's a firesteel from Light My Fire :D

After scrolling to manufacturers website, I found the knife from the title - the FireKnife.

I was immediately enchanted :)

Though I will probably use it never, and not even then, I decided to buy it. The most probable use would be for cutting, not wood, but bacon in winter :D

The price here in Croatia is 39 USD, so not much for a cool little knife, which, besides cutting food, can keep you running if I get lost like those 4 guys that got stuck in the mountain on Christmas here in Croatia.

However, as i kept googling, I found the other one from the title, Morakniv Bushcraft Survival

Price point here is 78 USD, which is double.

In my oppinion:

The plus sides of the Mora is that the spine is bigger inside the handle in all dimensions, the blade is thicker, the firesteel can take more beating, little sharpener
The plus sides of Fireknife is that it's more compact and cheaper.

Minus sides of Mora is the price, the bigger dimensions of the package. I'm going to disregard weight.
Minus sides of Fireknife is smaller firesteel, no sharpener, thinner blade.

Which one would You take?

Estimated usage - cutting food, perhaps in 1 of 10000 situation that You have to start a fire when stuck somewhere :D

I actually picked up both versions within the last couple of months, though the Bushcraft version I chose was the Orange one. It's Sandvik stainless and comes with a plain sheath. My reason was that I have plenty of carbon steel knives (the Black version is carbon) and wanted the benefits of stainless for some uses and I didn't need the firesteel and sharpener on the "Survival" model. Beyond that, I was able to get the plain SS Bushcraft version at a much cheaper cost without the sheath bells and whistles added.

The Light My Fire is a thin SS bladed knife by Mora as well. The fire steel is by LMF. It carves wood very well and has a squared spine for striking the included steel. I was skeptical of the thin, light knife until I handled one. It handles like a dream and appears plenty tough for most chores it would be called to perform. I've watched my buddy, an admitted knife abuser, get pretty rough with his and it didn't skip a beat. The handle is superb. To me, it is a great survival kit knife. That's what I bought it for. It's so light, 2+ oz., that it can be stashed and forgotten until needed. When needed, it'll have no problem cutting food and carving wood for fire prep. It's not for chipping cinder blocks or fighting zombies:D I actually bought two. One is in my HPG bag and one will go in my kayak dry box, as well as get dragged along for hikes and such.

The Bushcraft series by Mora is their heavy duty outdoor geared knife. It's much beefier than the LMF knife, but has an excellent handle (one of the best according to many). There are plenty of videos showing it being batonned and generally seeing rough use to demonstrate it's a tough knife. It also cuts very well.

In short, they're both tough, ergonomic, and well designed knives. For your uses, the LMF may be better, as carving/scraping for firecraft and food prep are what you stated as your needs. But, I'd suggest you look around for the non-survival version of the Mora Bushcraft Orange. I got mine on sale and it was actually close to the price of the LMF's, which were also on sale. I have plenty of fire steels, which I can attach to the sheath with a ranger band (piece of bicycle inner tube) and likely won't need a sharpener in the woods. Good luck.
