Like a Ka-Bar, But Better?

I've always loved the look of a USMC Ka-Bar knife, but they have never impressed me on finish and quality. I am in the market for a new fixed blade, primarily for camping and SHTF. I'm on the verge of buying a Ka-Bar, but before I do, is there anything that "looks" like a Ka-Bar, but is better quality?

What I want -
6"-8" blade
Blood groove
Stacked leather handle w/"grooves" (like ka-bar)
Black finish on metal
Metal pommel
Under $200, preferably, glad to look at any price range.

What about KA-BAR's "finish and quality" bothers you? I've always been pleased with it, even held a couple of them today and they were perfect.

If you're willing to forgo the looks you want for more utility (IMO), check out the Becker line.

I've always liked the finish too, authentic and haven't had any issues with that, but a better steel and sharper would be nice, toss in a better sheath and I would pay a little more for one again.

I'm confused. You want a knife for camping / shtf, but are worried about finish and quality?
Exactly what is it about Ka-Bar's finish and quality that wouldn't make it a great camping / shtf knife? Do you realize that Marines have been using that knife for those exact purposes for decades?

Well, what about the Ka-Bar Extreme? You can find them with either Kydex or leather sheaths, and the blade is D2 steel. I bought one long before I had a Ka-Bar USMC, and while I have other knives I'd rather use for camping, I would always reach for the Extreme ahead of the USMC if push came to shove. There are also a number of Ontario fixed blades I'd probably also opt for, the discontinued SP19 being a personal favorite.

Have you actually handled a KaBar USMC lately?

If you're willing to spend $200 and want something with better fit-n-finish, there are several knifemakers here that will gladly make exactly what you want.

The main part I don't like is the guard between the blade and the handle. Also, the older ones seem to have nicer (darker and smoother) leather on the handles. I'd prefer more of a blued finish. I had a SOG S1 Bowie, I really liked it...

I have no idea why camping/survival knife needs to start ugly. People buy nice looking guns and SUVs, even though those are going in the woods, too.

OP, I think there are some really nice knives of this type, but almost none of them are going to have attractive black hardware. The only thing I can think of are some of the SOGs, like the Bowie 2.0 or Agency black. Otherwise, the dressed up versions of these knives showcase the good materials by keeping the colors natural - brown leather and stainless or brass guards.

TOPS make a knife closely based on the USMC style. Not sure on it's name, but you'll know it when you see it.

The TOPS knife you are talking about is the US Combat Knife model. It is over $200 though. It is quite a beast though. It lengthens the USMC profile by a half inch for a 7 and one half inch blade. It is an amazing quarter of an inch thick! Yikes! Full tang handle construction, 1095 steel and black linen micarta scales. Whichever knife you get OP be it the TOPS, a BK or a new USMC I personally recommend the D2 Extreme Fighting Knife. Any knife just mentioned I would also have reground. All of the said knives will still have plenty of steel left for strength and durability but will cut like a wharncliffe. I currently have my own D2 Extreme out at Razors Edge Sharpening for a regrind. I have had the D2 Extreme a couple of years and it has been the most indestructible fixed blade, with a blade over 5 inches, that I have ever seen. Idk what the specifics are of Kabars manufacturing process for their D2 steel is but whatever it is gave me a D2 Fighting knife with a kick ass blade side only guard that does not chip, bend and youve gotta really work to actually put a scratch in the steel. I have even done the mallet it into the side of a tree a couple of inches and stand on the exposed blade and handle test. The knife barely flexed at all.

I will have my regrind, 14dps, back next week and cannot wait. Any Becker will have a ton of steel left after even a FFG regrind.

First, +1 on the D2 Extreme if you want "something like a KABAR". Doesn't match all your specs exactly (grey epoxy coating on the blade instead of black "whatever" and Kraton rubber instead of leather on the handle) but otherwise matches up and would work well.

The guard on a 1219C2/USN MK2 is just what it was designed to be - functional, inexpensive and quick to make and produce. Kabar tries to remain relatively true to the original specs, just the pommel is different so as to maintain integrity between identifying an original WW2 1219C2 and a modern version (the 1217).

When you talk about the "rougher" leather handles, we have to ask which "Kabars" were you looking at. All of my personal 1217s came with pretty smooth leather handles. Not as smooth as any of my 1943 first production run low mileage KABAR/CAMILLUS 1219C2s/USN MK2s, but those have had 70+ years to "wear-in".

If you were referring to "other "Kabars", say a late Camillus version (post contract termination - 1983 to 2007 bankruptcy), yes, those "Kabar" handles feel very rough to me. So do the current production Ontario versions. And talk about rough, the CASE XX reproduction (which they never produced a single knife of during the war except for 2 prototypes) are rough as cobs.

The darker, smoother finish you see on "older" versions is probably from use. Sweat, skin oils, rain, whatever will darken the leather rings over time. Use will also "slick down" the handle surface from frictional usage handling. My user 1217s started out dark brown. Each is now a slightly different shade of "darker brown", as each gets used a different amount.

The 1281/1282/1283 D2 Extreme has a different style guard and pommel than the 1217. Some people like them, others don't. The handle is also made of grooved Kraton. This material is very grippy even in the wetest weather and cleans up easily. It is 0.8 ounces heavier than the 1217. The only differences between the 1281/1282/1283 are the black sheaths. 1281 comes with a Cordura nylon sheath, 1282 with a plastic hard shell sheath and the 1283 is leather.

YMMV.

ETA:: The 1281 is partially serrated. Some folks don't like that, some do. I can take it or leave it. If I had to cut more line or rope, that might be important.

How about black jack knives (bark river)? They are bit more like Randall but have stacked leather.

That TOPS US Combat knife looks pretty cool actually. Bit pricey though..

Got a 1282 and its F ing awesome. Had some concerns initially (tang width, D2 'brittleness') but the more I researched it the more I realized it's a very capable knife. Super stoked I got one.

I'm sorry, but the ultimate SHTF USMC Ka-Bar is obviously a Busse TGLB in my humble opinion.

Kabar will hopefully be making the EK line later this year. I think the Kabar Marine Corps knife is a fairly good knife that can take a lot of hard use. You might look at the Kabar Becker line but they don't generally have that slim profle. The BK-10 and BK-7 would fit.

I have been waiting for a Buck 119 Brahma to become available. Does this fit the bill? Approximately $80 retail.
