I have a couple leather sheathes for my fixed blades, and one of them is looking a little stiff and dry. I have a huge can of Boiled Linseed oil, the kind you buy at the hardware store. Will it work as a preservative for leather?

Linseed oil is a wood preservative.

Leather gets something else. I've been using SnowSeal on all my leather stuff, and been very happy.

Don't use linseed oil on leather. Yuk.
Plenty of good commercial leather dressing products around.

+1 on the snow seal especially if your going to be doing a lot of outdoors type stuff, snow rain ect.ect.

"Snow Proof" leather treatment-brings it back softer than new. Best boot weatherproofer I've ever used.

Lexol is great stuff and is recommended by many holster makers.

For sheaths, soft isn't necessarily a good thing. It needs to be stiff enough to hold it's shape. My favorite mixture is parafin with mink oil. The best commercial product I've found is Red Wing leather dressing with pine pitch, mink oil and beeswax.

Same here. It seems to do a good job of moisturizing and protecting the leather, without softening it.
