Do not cut the foil seal atop the plastic bottle of liquid drain cleaner (acid) with any knife you value. Sanded my daily carry for a few hours to get rid of the black stain. Face-palm.

Yup. That stuff is immensely caustic and high on the pH scale. I usually just stab through it with a pencil while wearing gloves and throw away the gloves and pencil when I'm done.

Most drain cleaners I work with are basic (caustic) containing KOH, high on the pH scale. There are some acidic drain cleaners (corrosive) containing H2SO4, making it low on the pH scale.

Most main stream drain cleaners are basic.

Gotcha -- I was thinking of the acidic ones. :)

What steel was your knife? Maybe drain cleaner can be used to patina stainless then. Hhmmm?

I work with caustic soda on a regular basis. My work knives will get dunked in a bag of dry orange powder (think orange cleaner) to keep them from getting etched but it literally seems to take seconds.

Water is mostly pointless.

I'm interested in what those look like after getting dunked. Can you post pics please?

Don't feel bad. Back in 1991 i was cleaning my new Beretta 92FS & had it spread out on a towel on the table. Wife said drain was plugged. I poured some LP in & was letting it work. While in the middle of this project, the phone rang. I handed the bottle to my wife & she set it on the table to answer the phone. It was for me. When walking into the kitchen to hand me the phone, the cord tipped it over onto my barrel & i did'nt realize it until it was too late. It still is like that to this day. Took some of the blueing/finish right off.

Similar thing happened to me when I was prepping to rough up a concrete floor for shop paint---I removed the foil under the cap on a jug of "Muriatic Acid" I wiped the blade asap but apparently not good enough. It was on my small stag handles Case lock blade---I just tell my self it gives character :D
