Hello..... I've been using JT for my heat treating, and have been Very happy (and I will continue to in the future)

but I've got a couple new small batches in the works, and I know his turn around time isn't going to work.

I've looked in the stickies, and couldn't find a list?
If there IS one, id like some help finding one, Thank you.

my steels I like are

AEB-L
80crv2

I'm trying a batch of 15n20 for the first time

Is Peter's the only other place now?
Please help.

*I know my Gold membership expired last week or so...... I'm trying to decide Which membership is Best for me, now.... Thanks!

Tru Grit also provides heat treating services by Jeff Mutz. I have sent four blades to him made from AEB-L. However, I sent him these blades back in the beginning of October! I called twice trying to get ahold of someone to ask where my blades are in the process and the furthest I got was someone asking to take my name and number so he could give me a call back. I finally about two weeks ago called again and it happened to be Jeff. Asked where my blades were and he said they were going through a temper cycle so I finally gained some relief. Apparently he was in the process of moving and wasn't in the shop much but, I would of thought that they would at least have sent out an email notifying the customer that turn around time was going to be slow. I was also supposed to get my blades back sometime last week but, I have yet to hear anything about them. Looks like I will be calling back again.

His turnaround time is apparently supposed to be about two weeks which is what I was told by Jeff and I understand the circumstances that he explained to me but I am still a little disappointed in the service. You could try Tru Grit and hopefully you get a better experience than me.

I have stuff through other makers sitting (at Other heat treaters) since Summer waiting....

I have no problem waiting only a few months....haha/Ugh. :/

Thanks. I never heard of them (but I'm new)
I'll check out what other steels they do.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Texas Knife Supply will only heat-treat air quench steels such as stainless. From what I saw on the website they do not heat treat steels that need to be oil-quenched.

Yes, that should be correct from what I have seen on their website.

You might talk with JT and see what he can do - he might can do better than you expect on special request for a batch.

I have been happy with Peters for A2, lots of 3V and some stainless Damascus. The cost is significant for small batches.

I just went out on a huge limb with them and will find out on Monday how it turned out. I sent some W2 pieces including a large Bowie, requesting a hamon (oil quench, clay etc). I drew with sharpie roughly where I wanted the transition. Fingers crossed for what I see on Monday...

Please keep Us posted here, that sounds Exciting!!!

I'm quite happy with peters, Brad always takes great care of me. There is generally a 2-3 week wait but it's not too bad unless you catch them right before blade show.

i use peters. usually a 2 week turnaround time. they use nitrogen purged furnaces, so no foil needed for stainless. i have heard they do heat treat for nasa, so the consistency must be decent. i usually do 15 blade batches so it costs less.

I used to send Brad (Peter's) batches of 100-200 stainless blades. The HT was always spot on. The use of a torch in straightening does cause some people to have issues with them. I haven't had any big issues with their torch straightening. Haven't sent any in a while, due to life and doing my own HT on smaller batches.

AFAIK the torch thing is really rare and you can tell when they do it because they sandblast your blade afterwards haha, I haven't had any issues whatsoever with them about that

I’ve heard they use a torch quite often from consultants in the industry and people sending their blades in, I’ve seen examples of carbon steel knives with torch marks left on them and blue running almost to the edge. Personally torch straightening is not a process I want done to my blades unless I’m observing or the one doing it. Even then I prefer a carbide straightening hammer to surface peen any warp out. I think the issue I really have with Peters is they aren’t upfront about that process and if they sand blast the knives typically after straightening then they are hiding the visual colors after that process so you would need to have a hardness tester to check along the entire edge to make sure they didn’t mess it up.

Update..... I've held off with heat treating anything, and continued buying steel/grinding blanks.....

Unfortunately, I have 13-14 now that need to get sent out.

Because of the variety of steels, I believe JTknives JTknives would be easiest and so yesterday I went to put in my order......
As a heads up, apparently He's not taking orders anymore, or is just trying to catch up?
His website says "sold out" for heat treating services, too

I hope everything is getting better with his wife and the new baby?
It's been awhile since I've seen any of his postings.

What kinds of steels have you had with Bos?
that might be my next best option?

My blades are
A2
80crv2
15n20
AEB-L

My next batch of ordering I hope to test out
3V
D2
8670

I believe I can send my A2 to Boss, (and I'll probably save my AEB-L and 80crv2 for Jarod) but I'll have to research the rest........
More options of places, I'm all ears.

Peters, just sounds so expensive for small batches.

Thanks.
