Evening all!

How is everyone? I was hoping for some recommendations for little pocket knives. More specifically, ones with a maximum blade length of 6cm, tang included to be safe. I am out here in Japan for two years and, unfortunately, do not have my slippies with me, with the exception of a canoe pattern, a tad too large than legal carry out here.

Generally speaking, I like medium to larger patterns with 1-3 blades, and have never really owned a small slippy. What would you recommend? I love unusual patterns and styles of all types, exotic blade shapes and materials alike. I am trying to stay away from standard stuff like a small Buck Stockman or Peanut because I want to see what all else I can find first. If I can't find anything that catches my eye, I shall join the ranks of the Cult of the Peanut.

Thanks all, take care

Hey Jim, hope you are doing well, a nice sturdy little slip joint is the Gec # 26, very robust comes in 3 different blade configurations

I also like the Eisenhower pattern, but more of a basic pen knife

Maybe a small congress or a whittler pattern?

Pete

Look at the GEC and Northwood knives in the 3" to 3.25" range, most of which should have blades under 6cm. The GEC #25 pattern is nice, particularly the Wharncliffe Jack, with a main blade that is about 5.5cm. And don't dismiss the #06 Pemberton, which in my mind is sort of a peanut on steroids. with a main blade about 5cm in length. It looks like a dinky little toy when you first see it, buy mine has proven to be an excellent performer once you get it good and sharp. Here's a thread where I posted a comparison of these two to each other and to a peanut.

Also look at the smaller Northwoods knives. The Norfolk Whittler looks like a winner, but confirm the blade length. I *think* the main blade is 2-1/4" (5.7cm) but check with our friends at Knives Ship Free to confirm.

I hope that helps.

Jim, IMO the biggest, little knife out there is the Case 22087SS Texas Jack, two blades (clip main and pen). The longest on mine measures 6.2 CM from tip to bolster (may vary slightly from knife to knife) - you could sharpen it down at the tip if your individual knife was a little over. If you want to stay well under get a Case Peanut 3220CV or 6220SS, but some find them to be slightly small in the hand. OH

Pete: I am well, my friend. How's the family? Are they well?
Those #26's are pretty stocky for such a small package, I may have to check them out a bit more. I remember looking at the first GEC Barlows with the large single bolster on top and fell in love, but the ones I liked are long gone; it had a Wharnie main and a clip secondary in stag with the UN-X-LD on the bolster. I also thought about a congress too, do you have any experience with them?

Bob: those #25's are amazing, i wish I could find one with the single large bolster on them. They are such a neat pattern. I keep hearing about the Pembertons too, I may give in and try one.

OldHunter: that is a really good idea actually, that 2mm of extra is easy to shave off.

Thank you for your input so far, I truly appreciate it!

Family is doing great Jim, we just had another daughter three weeks ago, as for the congress pattern it's one I've really grown to like very much, and with it's layout it may give you more handle while keeping the blades within the limit, here is a link with a variety of congress patterns, when I get a chance today I'll measure the blades on mine and let you know, but I think even a 4" 4 1/4" closed congress blades will fall within your blade requirements, my preferable blade layout for the congress is 4 different blades.

There are still some out there. I just saw a nice stag baby barlow with a main long pull spear point blade on one of the stocking dealer's websites.

Just released from Great Eastern Cutlery is the #09 Esquire at 2 7/8 inches closed. This will be available in a wide variety of handle materials. These are just starting to arrive at the Distributors. This one is in Ebony wood. Spear Main, Sheepsfoot secondary.

Aye, but are there any of these ones left? :p (Pic from google)

I know it's a long shot to look for one, but I would be happy to just find a 2-bladed #25 with a wharnie main at this point, hehe.

Bob, what's the main blade length on those little guys?

I just measured my large Boker Congress the spear and sheepsfoot come in at 2 3/8" from bolster to tip 2.375" =6.03cm, Boker carver congress largest blade is 2 3/16" bolster to tip 2.187"=5.55cm

Larger Boker

The main blade length from the bolster to the tip of the spear is 1 3/4 inches. From the ricasso to the tip about 1 5/8 inches.

Thank you so much Pete, pics always make everything so much better. I appreciate the time you took out of your day to help me out.

I really like the blade selection on those congress', and they seem like they would fit the bill pretty well.

The Pemberton is a sturdy and handsome little pocket knife with a 5.2cm clip blade and a smaller pen secondary. I find that I like this little knife more and more. It vanishes into the watch pocket and has a nice heft and feel to it. Overall length closed is 7.0cm.

You'd asked ref a Congess? My 2-blade Northfield #61 Half-Congress has a Wharnie/coping combo. The main Wharnie blade measures 6.2cm so this may work for you.

The GEC Maverick is a useful but unusual pattern, longest blade the clip @ 6.17 cm, tip to bolster when open. This one in primitive bone.
