I have visited several sword sites and a few of the makers talk about their work having "living or live" steel. What is this and what makes it better than steel that is not "alive"
thanks

As I understand it, they're talking about "bog steel", or what the Celts used to make before they could make crucible steels.

Basicaly it's iron heated real hot over a smokey fire so it can absord some of the carbon.

It's more involved than that, but you get the idea, and I don't have the specifics.

Is it any better than "dead" steel? I'll put it to you this way, it was a manufacturing process that was abandoned in favor of crucible steels by people who loved their swords.

Besides, if it's Angel Sword you're talking about, it's a ripoff. No weapon is worth as much as they charge, I don't care who made it or what they claim. Some colector *might* be willing to shell out the dough for an antique though.

"Live steel" only means it's a real sword made of real tempered steel and not a vaguely sword-like wall ornament made of mild steel or 300 series stainless or even chrome-plated aluminum, as many of the "swords" on the market are.

Mr. Allen, you are quite correct in your statement, but there is at least one person out there selling "living steel" that has "more magic" and is refering to a process of manufacture.

If I can find the link, I'll post it. I'm pretty sure it was Angel Sword, but I don't know for sure.

Hi,

Here're some links on Angel Sword and "living steel" :
http://www.angelsword.com/
http://www.angelsword.com/angelswords/livingsteel.html

And from the Angel Sword page...

"Magic - Living Steel also gathers, focuses and transmits a low frequency electromagnetic energy similar to that which our bodies run on, similar perhaps to the way in which a ruby focuses a laser. This is a measurable phenomenon that can also be felt by the human body. In ancient times there was no explanation for this other than magic. It is still magic today."

One thing I recall regarding Japanese swords was that the "soul" of the maker was infused with the sword, and a samauri who assisted in this process had a special bond with the blade. The process forged steel and samauri together...

...or something like that

See ya,

Nick

And if you wear one of those "living steel" swords, it'll lower your blood pressure, cure your arthritis, help you stop smoking - AND make you more attractive to the opposite sex!

Oh, if you believe this, I have a bridge for sale at an unbelieveable price
