I’m not sure how you all do your location pins but I thought I would share how I do mine. In the past I would just drill a small hole and use a small pin. But it was allways a pain getting a nice fit and I would allways end up loosing one becaus it would fall out. So I came up with this system and it seams to work very well for me.
First off you lay out where you want your holes to be on the handle material. Then drill your holes a tad undersized. Next get two screws that are larger then the hole you drilled. Then use one of the screws to basically tap the hole. Work it in and out gently untell it bottoms out. Then do the other one. I then screw both screws all the way into the holes and clamp the handle material in the vise. Use a hacksaw or dremmel tool to cut the heads off leaving however much sticking out that you want. You then unscrew them pliers and use the grinder to gently and carefully remove the threads from the section that sticks out. I then grind a point onto the end but you don’t have to. I use the point to mark the back of the guard where the mating holes will be located. If you don’t want to grind a point onto the end you can just thread them in backwards and use the point of the screw. Just make sure the cut off end has clean threads so it does not mess up the threads in the handle material. You can give them a drop of epoxy or super glue if you like and thread them in so the ground stud is sticking out. Now you just use a file to file them down till the guard sits flush with the handle and your all set. If the mating holes in the back of the guard are a little sloppy that’s ok. Use a pointy center punch and very lightly punch around the hole. Only do it in the direction that’s sloppy. So if the guard is tight left to right but moves up and down then just do very light punch marks above and below the holes. You can get a VERY tight fit this way that actualy snaps into place. Here are a few pictures I took tonight when I thought you guys might want to see how I do it.
