Hi,

Just jumping into the hobby and have some knives I want to take apart and learn about.

My local hardware store didn't have Loctite Blue but did have a Taiwan-produced threadlocking adhesive: MySticky

A Google translate of the above info says the main component is methacrylic acid, which is also how Loctite 242 is described on their UK website.

Have I found a cheap local substitute or should I track down the real thing?

thanks

I've been using the Suzuki 1360 medium strength for many years. Easier to deal with and more effective. Easy disassembly.

Auto parts stores typically sell thread locker in various colors/strengths. Thread locker is a necessity for motor vehicles.

Auto supply was my second thought. So I found a big one and asked. No such animal! Not even no-brand alternatives. That's more or less what made me want to understand better exactly what I had picked up earlier.

Blue in the LocTite brand is way, way too tenacious for little tiny screws like that. Look at their Purple which is more like chewing gum and I find better suited to small fasteners. Even bee's wax works great for me in applications where I have an adjust screw or some such that needs to be "dial" occasionally but that doesn't get turned all the way down tight but at the same time is part of a very dynamic structure. Think bicycle spoke nipples. Ironically the junk they sell just for bicycle spokes "spoke prep" tends to interact too strongly with aluminum nipples and causes it to seize up. Sorry to babble on . . .

yah . . . check out the purple LocTite.

Loctite Blue has always been for screws 1/4" and larger. Loctite makes a removable one in pink for screws under 1/4". It is not so common in local stores so might need to be ordered online. Used it in the pharmaceutical field for years. It's number is 222. I found this to be the best especially if you need to remove the screw.
