I've pretty much decided on a Bark River Gunny to add to my collection. I really like the idea of the scandi grind, but I'm wondering if the standard Barky grind is easier to maintain. Is there anyone out there with a scandi grind Barky that could help shed some light on this decision? Also what is everyone's opinion of the gunny? Particularly vs the Northstar?

I would get the convex, it should slice better.

The blade width-to-thickness ratio creates some geometric constraints on the slicing ability....go as thin and resistance-reducing as you can.

That said, it has an awesome handle.

I have three standard convex gunnys. It is a great size knife for most uses. The handle is also very comfortable to me.

The only thing I didn't like was the thumb ramp. Each one of mine is now rampless. In my opinion, it is heads and tails above the Northstar for my usage. YMMV.

Both feature convex bevels, as do all Bark River knives currently in production,

...so both of them will be "easier to maintain".

The grinds do look quite a bit different, but the terminal geometry is very similar.

The handle of the Gunny is fully contoured; the Northstar's handle has a simpler shape, but work very well for a variety of hand sizes.

Personally, I find the drop point designs of the Fox River and the Highland Special to be closer competitors to the gunny then the Northstar's spear-point blade.

The ergonomics of the Gunny's handle is quite comfortable. I do prefer a Gunny in the rampless variety, though. Out of the different variations, I'd have to say that the Gunny Hunter is my favorite. I has a slight drop point and no ramp. It's perfect IMHO.

Northstar or Gunny??? I'd choose a Gunny as long as it is the Gunny Hunter.

If you really want an in-depth comparision between the scandivex gunny vs the full convex gunny, check out virtuovice youtube channel.

I'd get a rampless gunny with regular grind. I don't find scandi grinds to be any easier than a convex or full flat. I've always felt like the rampless gunny's were drop dead sexy.
