Or a spatha. anything that is of this design/style lol.

I don't make those kinds of swords but if you look around with some of the makers in shop talk etc I bet you could find someone that could make one of quality for around that much.

One option is to get a gladius bare blade from Albion and either finishing it yourself or getting someone to do it for you.

Really, the best choice in production gladius (really the only quality choice I think) is Albion.

I agree, Albion is the only real choice for the price point. They are the best. If you want a scabbard it will cost you xtra

I own a LOT of swords in various price ranges; I don't know where this Albion stuff is coming from. No doubt, they are first class-so is the price. Of the Gladii I own, the best value, as far as a sturdy, good looking (except for the scabbard), reasonably accurate (a little long), and very usable (not a wall hanger) sword, the Generation 2 (legacy arms) pompeii gladius is a bargain.

TraditionalFilipinoWeapons.com has a Gladius for $350, I do know the quality of that sword though

It depends on what you want I suppose. They are first class. Their prices are commensurate. If having first class isn't as important to you, then you can buy something cheaper. The generation 2 offering isn't terrible. It's also not as nice as the Albion.

Perhaps you did not read the OPs question or perhaps you know where I can buy an Albion Gladius for $200 to $500. Also, I have a number of first class swords by makers like Tinker Pierce and Angus Trim and others; but, this is not my thread. I chose to deal with the OPs request.:p Oh, and if you have a gen 2, you know it is far from -not terrible.

:thumbup:My next blade purchase is going to be a couple of those blanks. It just sounds like a fun project, and a great way to get ahold of a quality sword for a really good price.

hamhands, I'd say Albion is still in the ballpark as long as you start with a blank.

The Gladius style blanks run $165 including heat treatment. Surely, someone could make a nice handle with the extra $300+ that would be left over (probably less?).

The Government: that is a good idea if the OP is up to the project. I was unaware that they sold blanks, and that they were so inexpensive  If he is not, the problem is that, with Albion and Arms and Armor, one pays quite a bit for the research which provides authenticity (Del Tin also, but the quality is not there). I will add Kris cutlery to the mix. If any of their Gladii are available they are a good buy and good quality; with the owner (Cecil) being a very helpful man. Good luck hamhands I sugest you check out Kult of Athena for a large selection to browse for ideas or purchase (good people, though Ryan can be a bit prickly). Enjoy the search. :D

What level of authenticity were you thinking? Do you want an authentic historical replica, or just the blade style?

Blade style mainly. I have large hands so I'm thinking of goin with the bare blade and finishing it up myself.

That's a good idea! I've got one of Albion's bare Jody Samson cutlass blades, and an Allectus (Maintz gladius) that someone handled. It's a nice sword.

As another thought, check out some of the so-called "tactical" gladius models. If you get yourself a basic blade with no-frills, slab handles on a full tang, you can come in with a good, 5160 blade for under your target cap. Wouldn't pass muster in a re-enactment camp; but it would be a strong user.

Talk to Crimson Falcon. He's a BF member; he did a nice gladius for me!

Edited to add: check out this thread:

BePrepared's gladius (pictured) is just like mine. Crimson Falcon is a good man!

Without trying to start a storm, did anyone notice and know what glades was used in the Forged and Fire episode, the one the test gladius was beat against three times. It was set in a fixture and the test gladius hit it three times. Not sure but it looked like a Cold Steel gladius machete to me. John
