Any reccomendations for a well built, reliable, lightweight headlamp? Must be bright enough to navigate through the woods safely. Long battery life a must. Thanks!

there are a lot of good headlamps out there these days...

i have had a PETZL TIKKA plus for about 5 years now... i love it... it's a nice all around light at a great price...

Petzl e+LITE Headlamp

It works great has a bunch of features and under $40

I'm trying to work with a Chinese company on getting my own design built..... Slow process, but if it works, Petzl and the other big Western companies that have become complacent with ancient technology are going have a surprise :)

I have a Black Diamond Ion that is great. Light, bright but the battery is an odd size.

I have about 6 headlamps and the Petzl Tikka XP kicks all their butts !!!

I normally carry a Princeton Tec Scout or a Rayovac 1AA with me daily. The Scout weighs nothing and while not that bright runs forever on a set of coin cells. A friend used it as a reading light for several hours every night for a week and it is still going (visibly dimmer than it started out though). The Rayovac has surprisingly good throw, and with the defuser in place it give a nice flood.

That said, I used a Princeton Tec Quest with a SMJLED PR2 bulb in it extensively in the past month because of Gustav. The Quest / SMJLED is very water resistant, dead simple with no tiny switches or parts to fail, runs a long time on 2 AA batts (happy with NiMHs, alkis or lithiums) and can be completely disassembled to dry if out if it does get wet. I plan on setting up Quest / SMJLED combos for all the immediate members of my family for their emergency kits.

I have a princeton tec Aurora (3x 5mm LEDs, 3 AAA batteries, 4 lighting modes) and a Princeton tec Eos (essentially the same as the aurora except 1x 1 watt LED) - both are great.

I've got a super-lightweight LED headlamp that I got from wally world for ten bucks. Rubber armored. It's actually been a very handy little bugger, even has different brightness settings. I'll look for the brand name.

the enegizer ones at walmart work great, and for the price you cant go wrong, they have 2 different styles to choose from and it comes with batteries

I've had (and have) a bunch of them, but the Black Diamond Icon is my favorite. For a pure lightweight unit, the Petzl Tikka is hard to beat.

Stay sharp,

I have Princeton Tec Aurora, EOS and Zebralight. All work good for camp chores, reading, and walking about after dark. All are durable and can be dropped or splashed with water. The Aurora is 6 years old and still works fine. The EOS is about 3, the Zebralight less than a year. I like the Zebralight best; compact, versatile, uses just one AA battery, and it is far simpler to change batteries in it than in the others.

Surefire is coming out with a headlamp soon. 0 to 100 lumen adjustable power; uses 123 or AA batteries. Unfortunately, it costs almost $200.

For AAA headlamps, I can't recommend Princeton EOS or Petzle Tikka-series enough...both are excllent. For compact (single cell) AA or 3V (123) headlamps, I love Zebra lights...excellent flood for hiking and good burn times in very small, compact and simple packages.

Petzl or Princeton Tec.

I've been using Princeton Tec Auroras for a while now with no complaints. Found them on sale for $10 apiece a while back, and I grabbed a bunch. Have them stashed all over and use them for camping and kayaking in particular.
