Looking for a knife to carry while running

I work out quite a bit with my workout mainly outside. Since I always have a knife with me I also carry one when I am running/jogging. During my workout I stop and do quite a bit of push-ups, pull-ups, etc. depending on what the terrain allows.

I normally wear a pair of gym/mesh shorts or workout out pants and a t-shirt, long or short sleeve. 70% of the time I have my dog with me so I also carry a leash in one hand and, depending on weather and distance, a bottle of water in the other hand. I've got the dog's poop bags that I normally through in my pocket and that's about it.

I've been carrying my Delica clipped in my waste band and it's fine when I'm just jogging but the minute I bend over it jabs me in the stomach or leg. I tried it a few times clipped on the wasteband in the middle of my back, but the knife is not very accessible and when I do sit ups it gets in the way.

What do you guys carry when working out? I'm not looking for suggestions for when you're hiking since I don't carry a back pack when I'm running or jogging.

Law in my state is a 3" max blade.

Anyone?

after rereading your post, just clip your knife to your pocket and it should be out of the way. alternatively, you can get a sheath that sits sideways on your waiste.

Why would he want to bother with a sheath/belt while wearing mesh gym shorts??

I carry a Boker Subcom clipped IWB on my gym shorts, and I cannot feel it or even tell its there. Very light and doen't bother me while moving around.

My apologies. I forgot to mention that clipping it to my pocket is not an option as it would just flop around like crazy hit my leg.

IMHO a sheath would just add more weight to my shorts.

Thanks for your input.

because it would allow you to carry it sideways and if its nice if it rubs against you it wouldnt feel that bad.

Hey LB, thanks. I had a Subcom and got rid of it since it didn't sit well in my pocket. Thinking back on how the knife handled and clipped I think it may do pretty well in my waste band as it's not a very long handle would barely come to the bottom of the waste band itself.

Does is easily clip or does the material in the band need to stretch the clip out a bit? Have you had any issues with the clip becomming loose?

Thanks bro.

oh btw the best solution I can think of for your situation is a fixed blade and to get a leg holster type deal (think of the things people have for their arms that they put their ipods in) and to mount it high enough where it cant be seen.

you would have to get a small one though.

Can you wear a neck knife? Lots of good ones in the makers section, Busse is selling one now that should make a good one, and several big companies make versions as well (Buck, CRKT, etc). But you can find some really great ones in the makers for sale section, look around there. I wear one when jogging, works out fine.

The Subcom clip is a bit tight but just bend it out a bit while clipping it to your waistband, and it'll practically never come loose. I haven't had any problems with either the clip or screws coming loose.

In fact, sometimes its a bit tough just getting the Subcom unclipped to my pocket/IWB, but I think in your situation where you need it for lots of activity, I'd think this would be a benefit.

I've tried a neck knife once before but I never really felt comfortable having it there. I kind of got nervous that the constant impact of running would jar the thing loose. I'm sure it was fine, but it was one of those things in the back of my head that I could not forget. I used a Becker Necker at the time.

I used to clip a FB on my belt, CRKT Stiff Kiss, but didn't care for it much.

Mc Manis - way to think outside the box on this one. If I used a arm band for an iPod that would actually be a great idea. You could pretty much put any small FB or Folder on there that you'd want. Maybe if I ever decide to use an arm band I'll try it out.

I don't think a FB strapped to my leg would go over all that well in Sheepleville :)

Thanks fellas.

Thanks, bro. I'll keep an eye out for one in the FS section here or see if I can trade something for one.

Ever thought of adding a lightweight waist/fanny pack that carries a water bottle? I wear mine when I bike (too fat to run). It's also nice to keep a little dish in it so fido can drink too. Also, keep hands free for when you drop for push-ups, etc. Plenty of room to clip/carry an EDC knife then.

LMFAO...

Not a very bad idea. I've seen people wearing one while jogging. I'm sure I can find some that are sort of small and comfortable to wear. There is a running story near me, maybe I'll go check it out and talk to the guys/gals in there and see what they use.

Pretty soon I'll be pushing a jogging stroller from time to time so I'll have plenty of room for stuff in that thing.

it would probably irritate the sheeple, but a fixed blade with a sheath and across-the shoulder mount would probably stay in place and not bounce annoyingly when you're jogging.

Personally I think a 12" machete fits the bill well, here :)

Might be a bit big, though... so maybe going with the boker subcom is a good idea.

You're probably not wearing IWB at the proper spot, everyone has this 1 spot where it's perfect, some wear at 1 oclock and find it very comfortable, some find it uncomfortable, i wear IWB at 3'30" o clock.

HAHAHAHA - A 12" machete strapped to my back like a sword would be cool... hell I could just carry a sword and tell people I'm training to be a Spartan!

Yep, sounds like Subcom may fit the bill.

ahahahaha that made me laugh a good bit :D

I clip my Mini Griptilian or Caly 3 clipped to the waist band of my running shorts, right above my right hip. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but now I don't even notice it's there.

Strangely, the Caly 3 was more uncomfortable at first, even though it's much thinner. Has to do with the low-ride clip and where the butt of the knife pokes you in the side.

I wouldn't recommend clipping anything to your pocket, it's liable to work its way out as you run.

I usually wear a 1.5 liter CamelBak, and still prefer IWB for knife carry. If you really can't stand IWB, get a small CamelBak. They come in all sizes, from fanny pack to small backpack, and all have places for tucking gear away. If nothing else, you won't have to carry a water bottle with you the entire time you're running, and you'll stay plenty hydrated.

You chaps are rather suburban at times! I actually do carry a cutlass (machete) in my CamelBak, but then I live in Trinidad & Tobago.
