Volume is not the only characteristic to consider. Pitch comes into play, too. Lower tones carry farther than higher one. The Fox 40 may still be the winner. I don't know.

Shrill whistles may be better for attention getting, at least for younger folks.

I keep the larger Storm Whistle attached to my BCD for rescue at sea. That sucker is LOUD!! You can actually blow it and hear it underwater! Loudest whistle made, as far as I know. It's I have a Fox that I keep in my survival kit for land use, only because it's smaller.

not to hijack anything but seems like the storm has alot of fans for being the loudest.....anyone have any thoughts about the most bang for your buck out of a very small whistle?....something loud but easily carried on a keychain?.....ryan

I like using a ACME Thunder when I work on the pool deck (volunteer with USA Swimming). The kids seem to hear the ACME better than the FOX 40 when it's really noisy.

Here's a link to a site with some whistles. They have some audio sound bytes so you can hear the different tones.

If you are constantly going to use your whistle, the Fox 40 is easier on the teeth because its plastic. I have a whistle guard on my ACME so the metal doesn't hit my teeth.

One distinct advantage that the Fox 40 is pealess, so if you accidentally spit in your whistle it still sounds OK.

Made by a company called "Whistles for Life".

This thing hurts when you blow it at full power. 3 chambers, 3 pitches. I think it is the official whistle of the National Association of Search and Rescue.

I have UST's Jetscream. I like its low profile and it makes quite a distinct sound.

low tones might be fine for very small search areas, but the loud shrill tones can be heard for miles.....which is important if you trying to alert people. That is why all NATO, SOLAS, USCG, Canadian Coast Guard, CDN MILITARY, US Military whistles are required to have over 110 decible HIGH PITCH ratings.

Fox 40, Storm are all highly rated and PROVEN.

I can whistle blowing through my fingers louder than any whistle I've ever heard. I can hurt my own ears. It took about a month of practice when I was about 12.
