Hey guys, Im looking for a new back pack. its mainly going to be used to just keep all my outdoor gear and also use it for day hiking.

I like the more tacticool bags like maxpedition and 5.11.

The one bag i have really considered getting is the Maxpedition Typhoon or the Condor. I like the 5.11 bags but they are a bit more than I want to spend.

Are their any other brands of bags similar to Maxpedition and 5.11 that are priced more towards maxpedition prices?

EDIT: I got another question for you guys.

Can any of you recommend a good lighter for the outdoors? Im not looking for a zippo type lighter but more of a emergency/windproof type lighter.

Thanks guys

I've got no knowledge of packs even though I need a new one too...

I do however know most of everything there is to know about lighters :D
If your looking for something reliable in wind the obvious choice is any butane jet lighter. The flame will most likely not go out and like any good survival lighter, will not run out of fuel in a month due to evaporation. The only drawback to a butane lighter is that they are not very waterproof. Many camping stores and even dollar stores will have a jet lighter with a waterproof case. When my parents were looking for a new car to accommodate my brother getting his drivers license, I grabbed a promotional trinket lighter at a jeep dealer. I was impressed by its ruggedness, it had a compass a waterproof casing and a pen knife!
My final advice is that a good survival lighter is whatever suits you, I'm in Canada so I need a really well made lighter for it to not freeze get wet blow out and get eaten by a moose all at once, but if your in navada you probly won't worry as much about snow.
The best survival lighter is not going to cost any more than ten or fifteen bucks, and a wonderfully resource for lighters(as long as you do your research before buying) is www.dealextreme.com

Sorry for the long post,
Good luck

Where are you looking for your bags? I ask because Maxpedition and 5.11 bags are generally in the same price range. In fact, I just looked up the Typhoon, Condor II, and the 5.11 Rush 24, and found prices ranging from $90 to $120 on all three.

If that is what you're looking to pay, Camelbak, Kelty, Spec-Ops Gear, ATS Tactical, and Eagle Industries all make comparable stuff in that range. Any less than that, and you're looking at secondary market (used) or cheap Chinese knockoffs (which can actually be quite good, if you get lucky.)

you could look at the imco triplex for the lighter

I have a Maxpedition Kodiak that is my daily user. That being said, I just ordered an LA Police Gear 72 hour Operator bag. Much bigger and a terrific price.

Two votes for the 5.11 . I got the Rush 24 for EDC/GHB and the Rush 72 for BOB. Both are well designed, 1050 denier construction, have hydration pockets, and are built to stand up to heavy use. Sounds like the 24 is a better size for what you want. Don't be afraid to spend money for quality. Also, there is the Tactical Tailor Urban Operator pack for around the same price/build quality. I just liked the mo pockets and organization on the Rush packs.

The Maxpedition Typhoon backpack is very small. You can fit a 8.5x11 notebook in it, but nothing larger (thicker items, or a stack of such notebooks would fit). If it were any smaller, it would hardly be a backpack. That's why I bought it - light hikes where I don't need to carry too much stuff, but single shoulder bags get uncomfortable for me after 5 miles or so, even if they're only loaded to 10 lbs. If you want the smallest possible backpack, the Typhoon is a good one.

The 5.11 Rush 24 is a bit larger than average school backpack size, but the organization in it is absolutely amazing. I paid $100, and, frankly, I would have been happy with it if I paid $150. I wish all bags were as well organized.

I just got the Maxpedition Typhoon, which can be made into a great day pack if you attach some exterior bags. but for one bag without attachments I would get the Condor II. I am prob going to get that one soon. Here is a great youtube review of it.

The most comfortable day pack that I've ever used is the TRIZIP from Camelbak with the mystery ranch style harness.
