I have DMT combo stones on the way. I have no problem sharpening knives however, I'm looking to refine my finishing stages. I'll use a Spyderco Medium, then a Fine stone for refining the edge. Then I move to a green strop compound on leather, then bare leather.

I feel that I could add something in between the green compound and the bare leather. I'm trying to go from arm shaving sharp to hair whittling.

Any recommendation? I'm looking for a cheap solution. I can get balsa wood at a local store, but I need some direction on compounds.
Diamond Spray? Red Compound? Whatever else there is.

Thanks Comrades,
Dalton

I've heard good things about diamond spray, there's a ton of options. I still haven't tried any yet, they're pricey. Red compound is finer than green so that would be a good, cheap, quick option. You should be able to get hair whittling off a pretty fine stone before you get to the strop, do you cross hatch and minimize the burr with a slight microbevel? Of course stropping will make it finer either way, but the more you can do on the stones the more satisfying the stropping results will be.

Hi,
What kind of steel what knife are you sharpening?
Can you describe in detail how you sharpen( number of passes , angle, deburr how ... )?

You have all the equipment required
so getting to head hair whittling might be as simple
- as double angle deburring before you strop
- changing your stropping angle
- or the force you apply
- or number of passes
See the variations here Stropping: angle plus pressure and think about it when you strop

Although its possible using only spyderco stones if you microbevel
Try this pretty good debugging list of steps here for getting silly sharp with the sharpmaker Sharpening Curriculum

Bark river provides black(coarse) green(medium) and white(fine) compounds. Finish on bare leather and you'll be scary sharp.
Diamonds work great, but have a much steeper pricetag

These dmt stones rock, went through them all the way to EF. Then hit a med, fine, with spyderco ceramic. Green compound, then bare leather, newspaper/

Barely whittled a hair, but hair screamed off my arm. Best success yet. Now just more practice. Thanks for the help and links guys.

get 3 pieces of balsa wood then apply 3 different compounds (or diamond), 1 on each. start with the higher micron and end with .5 or .25

one guy I know uses flat glass, nano cloth and diamond spray and does excellent.

All great advice. If you really want to go to the umpteenth degree, your last barehide should be horse and not cow.
