Anyone have any suggestion for a high quality, tough-as-nails Barn/Field Jacket?

I have looked at Eddie Bauer, Landsend, Patagonia, LL Bean but haven't seen anything that stands out from the crowd.

Anyone own something that they really like?

Thanks, protodoc

I have an old black Woolrich barn coat-- made in the US-- that I have worn regularly for over ten years. I have beat on this thing. It has a removable wool liner. Huge cargo pockets with handwarmer pockets on top. It is perhaps my favorite coat of all time. It has a couple of holes around the cuff areas, and a hole in the left cargo pocket---just big enough for my Fisher Telescoping Bullet Pen to sneak out of and disappear. :(

If you can find a Woolrich barn coat--- get it.

Having said all that, I would imagine the Carhartt coats are tops, too.

I checked out some Woolrich barn coats on the internet. They arn't exactly like what I bought ten or so years ago. But they are probably the same quality. They are expensive, too.

Carhartt.
You just cant kill them, and they get better as the years go on.
There is a whole cult built up about Carhartts.

Another vote for Carharrt....I have one of their sandstone, blanket lined Chore coats that is hard to beat. You can find them for +/- $60 if you look around a bit.
good luck

I have a sandstaone, blanket lined chore coat in green. It flairs out at the hips a bit much for my skinny frame, but the coat is tough as nails.

I also have the Arctic Traditional with quilted lining for the colder months. I love this coat!!!!! The pockets are excellent and fasten with velco. There is even a drawstring for the waste.

The one that I really want is the newly redesigned Ranch Coat with sandstone duck and blanket lining. This baby looks like the ultimate spring and fall weather work coat.

May as well have the best... that's their motto.
Best stuff out there.

I am a huge Carhartt fan, but an even tougher (in my opinion) coat is one made by Wick Outdoor Works of Montgomery City, Missouri. They are a coon hunting supply company and have as good a warranty and customer service as you can find, as well as extremely high-quality products.

Call and request a catalog at 1-800-325-2112.

I have one of their coats I bought ten years ago, and have worn it hard. It hardly looks any different than it did when I bought it, Barbed wire just skates off this coat, it is so tough.

Cabelas has a nice looking one that is shearling lined.
I have the Cabela's one that is Flannel lined . . . OUTSTANDING coat!! Have worn it for everything from hunting to church and gotten compliments on it in both settings. Tough as nails!:D

Protodoc-

Go with a true classic... go with Filson. The woolen coats are of unbelievable high quality and the tin cloth garments (especially the wax-treated ones) are indestructable.

I have had an eddie bauer one for about 5 years now, and its holding up great. I hate the cut of it though. The arm pits are much too low on the coat and if I raise my arms the coat lifts up about 5 inches before refusing to let my arms raise any further.

That might not make sense so I'll just simplify it by saying it restricts my range of motion rather badly.

You should check www.sierratradingpost.com , they have some English coats similar to Barbours that retail for $370.00 for only $77.00. Also very good deals on other chore/barn coats, Charhartt, Ex-Officio, J.G. Glover all 35% to 75% off. I've ordered many times from Sierra, always first class stuff, excellant prices and very good to deal with

I have the Carhartt blanket lined ranch coat. They have several that are nice.

Carhartt.

Tough as nails, and way more coat than the price suggests.

I have barn coats from LL Bean, Orvis, Barbour, Patagonia and Carhartt. For the money, Carhartts are the best value. That is if you can put up with the extended break-in period. The Patagonia on was broken in out off the rack and holds up extremely well. But my favorite is the Barbour. It's totally waterproof, and extremely versatile. The wax smell takes a bit getting use to though.

I've had an old style Carhartt ranch coat for a little over a year now-- probably the best coat I've ever owned. It's incredibly warm, and very tough. My neighbor has a Carhartt that was run over by an 18-wheeler. the only damage was a small tear in the right sleeve. When/if it ever wears out, I'll buy another Carhartt.
