As a Wing Chun practitioner, I would like to buy a pair of functioning Chinese butterfly swords. I would like to spend around 200-350$.

The ones by Cold Steel immediately came to my mind:

Does anyone have any experience with them?

Or would you recommend a different brand?

Thank you,

From my minimal understanding of Wing Chun, the balance of the Baht Jom Doh ( if u really wanna prounounce it in Cantonese), the tang extends from the spine rather than the middle of the stock. The ones from cold steel are presented more for the Hung Gar practioner as the tang extends from the middle. Both Southern styles with VERY different movements. BTW, Baht Jam Dao Kuen makes no sense in spoken language.

I'd have to look again at the Hanwei ones. Hanwei is more representative of Mainland Mandarin (as the name itself is) and may not get the designs of Southern China fully.

Regarding the design of the swords, I thought the same about the tang until I saw the form and was told why the tang needs to be in the middle of the blade.

From my minimal understanding of Wing Chun, Bart Jam Dao means "Eight Cut Sword". Bart Jam Dao Kuen simply means the form performed with those swords.

Yes, I noticed the same thing about the tang protrusion you mentioned and noticed "shens" design was somewhat a happy medium between the two, and it passes with other blade designs that I've handled like the Khukri and many of the Pilipino blades I have. Still, IMO the tang from spine moves better for Wing Chun movement, and the middle tang is more suited for Hung Gar.

"You're miminal understanding" (facetious/humble, thank you), but, I guess I dont explain things very well sometimes.but, as you can tell I don't post often. I've enjoyed and agreed with most of your posts in prac tac.

To the O/P, The grind is poor on both the cold steel and the shen. It should be a full flat to flat/ minimal convex as the Japanese adopted for their swords from Chinese. AND CARBON STEEL!!!!!! NOT SURGICAL STAINLESS!!!!!!!!!!

They look nicely made. I've never seen the first set. I'd like to hold them. I thought about getting the second set, but I thought they were just a bit too heavy for what we do. Also, we prefer the design where the handles are flat on one side so they fit in one sheath.
