I have lots of axes, and a few Elwells, but I've never seen one like this. Is it a Trade Axe or an Export Axe? i've found a couple for sale, but would like some history on it, thanks, Joe.

That is an Edward Elwell export axe according to his catalogue, but that is commonly called a trade ax because it is the same design as the axes that were traded with the Native Americans in the 1700's. I can't pinpoint a manufacturing date, but I'd guess it's from 1900-1950, based off of similar-looking Collins trade axes. Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!

Thanks, that helps a lot. I've seen you over on AS. Thanks again for sending me here. I've been looking at some of the other axes I picked up Saturday. I think one is a Plumb Double Permabond. The head is black, and the eye has a red sealer in it, the haft is hickory. I cant find any markings in the steel, but, I think the Permabonds had paper labels. Both bits are near perfect, they have never been sharpened, no chips, the profile is perfect. Handle is shot.

Looks like a Plumb to me, possibly a paper-label example from the Cooper era.
