All,

Just would like to ask if you can recommend me a reliable source regarding sharpening supplies?

What I am looking for is a vendor with an online shop, preferred in the U.S., who ships internationally, but with other options than just USPS.

Please do not recommend Sharpening Supplies, as
- I already ordered at their store, so I "know" them
- They have good products and prices, also great customer service!
BUT
- They only ship internationally by USPS!
- Shipping by USPS here to Mexico, where I live, means the shipment is handled here in Mexico by Correos de Mexico, the local "partner" of USPS
- And that combination is nothing else than a (well known!) disaster!

9 (!) weeks ago Sharpening Supplies shipped an order from me, since 7(!) weeks the shipment is "hanging" here in customs and nobody (!) can tell me anything about the status and what is going on with the shipment!
On the other side, 8 weeks ago Sharpening Supplies shipped another order from me and it arrived (okay, you have to pick it up at the offices here) one week ago.
On the complete other side, I received several other shipments from the U.S. from other vendors, shipped by UPS, FedEx or DHL, always no later than a week after they have been shipped.

Always looking for the "bright side of live"... maybe I could have saved some money and and have sharpened my knives with my teeth... most likely I would have been done earlier, including the necessary visit at my dentist afterwards, than these shipments ever arrive here.:D

Any recommendations welcome!

I've ordered several items from Oldawan and they're great to deal with. They had this to say on their site:
We ship via UPS, FedEx and Postal Service, and we can ship to virtually any address in the world. Note that there are restrictions on shipping methods for some products, and some products cannot be shipped to international destinations. If there are any conflicts in this regard on your order, we will contact you to make any necessary arrangements.

I think knifecenter ships internationally by fedex, and has a decent variety of sharpening supplies.

I wonder if it might be worth asking Sharpening Supplies if they could ship UPS/FedEX/DHL? May be if they understood your situation they might work with you about it and make an exception.

I have used Chef Knives to Go a few times for domestic US purchases. Their shipping statement for international freight is:
  • Please note that all orders are placed in US dollars. Be mindful of the exchange rate.
  • We use DHL, Fed Ex, or US Priority Mail International depending on the country. Most orders to Canada will ship Fed Ex or DHL for arrival within a few days. If you have a carrier preference, please let us know in "Comments" when placing order.
  • Recipient is responsible for customs fees. It is NOT included in the shipping cost. DHL and FedEx will sometimes charge brokerage fees as well.
  • Shipping cost is determined by the weight of goods. Click on “Apply” to view shipping costs before the order is submitted.
If you don't see your country listed in the cart we don't ship there and we recommend you use a freight forwarder such as
Shipito

Also have had good experiences with Best Sharpening Stones. Their shipping statement:
All orders are shipped from our warehouse in Tomball, Texas USA. Orders received by 1:00pm EST Monday - Saturday will be shipped the same day. All other orders will be shipped the next business day. We ship via USPS Priority Mail or UPS to all US and international destinations. Standard delivery time is 2-3 business days maximum for all domestic orders.

Again, these smaller companies might be more flexible towards your needs if you explain your circumstances. At least it can't hurt to try and see what the say.

What format of sharpening stones are you looking for bench stones or edge pro format.

Considering my experience with USPS shipments to Mexico I was asking Sharpening Supplies even before I placed my orders if they could use another shipping method, but they told me they cannot do so.
Since then we have been in regular contact about the shipments, but at the end of the day it doesn´t solve the problem. They offered me to re-ship the missing shipment, but again just by USPS, something that doesn´t make any sense for me.
I will check out the options you stated, thanks for that.

You could also try Knife Merchant - they have an international shipping statement similar to Chefs Knives to Go. They do carry DMT products, but no Atoma.

You can get Atoma plates right from Japan off of ebay at a really good price but I can not say who will deliver them, you could look up Ken Schwartz on facebook I think he sells Atoma plates.

I only have USPS as an option on my site, but CAN ship by other methods by request. It's just very expensive to use other methods compared to USPS so most folks don't want other methods for that reason.
