Luminox Watches?

Hey guys,

I was at the mall today and I was checking out G-Shocks. I happened to see an all black Luminox watch... So, I asked to see it. Are they all made out of plastic? Even the backing and adjustment knob were plastic! I know plastic is plenty strong in Glock firearms etc but for $350 I find that to be questionable. Am I completely wrong on this?

Please let me know, Thanks!

I had one probably 10 years ago. Wasn't impressed. Get a G-Shock. Better watch and doesn't have a tritium dial face to give away your position in the dark. I also thought the Luminox was pretty cheaply made overall. Definitely wouldn't command the price tag it enjoys if it wasn't affiliated with a specialized military unit (Who in reality uses G-Shocks).

I had a Luminox (the green version) and it was complete garbage. The watch kept inaccurate time. I had to be readjusting it every week, and the case's plastic was so cheap that the pin that holds the strap literally carved a groove in the pin holders that would cause my strap to come off. It basically ruined the whole case. I suggest to stay away from Luminox watches.

G-Shocks on the other hand are the, toughest, most, rugged and reliable watches made. Nothing can beat them in toughness and reliability. I own many watches from Seiko to Marathon and a Rolex Deep Sea Dweller, but my wrist always sports a G-Shock. They're the only watches that I know will never fail me.

I've owned 2 Luminox watches. Both are about 10 years old. One is all metal and the other is all plastic. I have been extremely tough on both of them. They both keep excellent time and have been tougher than nails. If I had it to do over again it wouldn't bother me a bit to purchase another one.

the price is a little high. you can find them online from dealers for around 225. and they are worth it!!

Yeah? I don't know, I'm just not big on all plastic! I LOVED the watch and it fit really well. BUT, for that price I would honestly expect a Ti back or something!

I like a little weight to my watches, most of them anyways. The Luminox watches I've played with though just felt... dinky. :p Not for me.

I have two older ones and they are metal, they even came with a wrist compass.I bought one for my son and his lasted a little over a year, mine about a year.I was loading a truck and hit the watch on the side of the truck accidentally and after that the minute and hour hand just swung around loose.Damn it really sucked because the watch looked so cool and I gave $300 each for them.I bought a $20 S&W military looking watch at Big 5 and it's still good after about 7 years of hard use.Maybe I just got two lemons but it turned me off about ever spending more than about $50 on a watch.

Sounds like you are talking about the Colormark or the original navy seals series? If so, obviously $350 is way too much... that is the MSRP I believe. Anyway, the colormarks can be found brand new on certain online retailers for less than $200 (and its not that hard to find). The original navy seals model can be found brand new online for around $150 give or take 10 dollars or so. IMO that price is justifiable for the watch you get.

Also the case is not plastic like your tv remote. Supposedly it is a "polycarbonate/carbon case" as stated on the back. Probably just gimmick wording but I have a very phsyical job and the watch gets banged a few times a day on hard surfaces. No knicks yet.

The back plate on mine is metal as well as the knob. I absolutely love my Luminox watch, I have had it for close to ten years, no problems. Its so bright in the dark, no fumbling for a light button, The batteries last for Y E A R S, unlike my Timex Iniglo which needed a battery every couple months. My Luminox was worth every Penny, best watch I have ever had.

I have a luminox 3001, so far it is an awesome watch. It keeps fantastic time, and it's been durable (so far). I like it as much as my Omega (different watch entirely though). I've only had a month or so, so I'll let you know how it goes.

The tritium is AWESOME, much prefer it to any other kind of lume. Also FWIW, the case is not plastic, it's carbon which is entirely different. It's the same kind of materal they make handgun guide rods and stocks/grips from. It's very very tough. Also, it is very light.

Get the luminox 3001 and put it on a 2 buckle Zulu strap from countycom. You won't be disappointed.

I am wearing a Luminox steel case with PVD coating.Great watch.
I do not like the plastic cased Luminox watches but the steel case with sapphire crystals can't be beat.

I've posted this a couple of times, but I had a $300 Luminox with orange lettering and the second hand fell off inside the crystal when I knocked it off my nightstand on to a carpeted floor. Even before that, I was appalled by the flimsy cheap construction and feel. The tritium is great, but the build on the plastic Luminoxes suck. Timexes and Casios are better made, not to mention just about any other watch over $50.

Maybe the metal ones are better...

I own several Luminox watches and never had an issue with one. The knock offs marketed by United Cutlery are another matter.

I wonder how much it would cost to get mine fixed,it's kind of a waste to have two of them just gathering dust.Since they are long out of warranty,do you watch guys think it would be cheaper to have them fixed locally rather than sending them to Luminox?

The one time I had dealings with Luminox warranty was terrible.I could have bought a new watch for what they wanted to clean and replace o-rings.
Also to the OP,Traser makes some really nice ones and IMO they are better than Luminox.

Thanks for the info,I guess one day I'll go to a local watch repair and get an estimate. It's not really to big a deal since I'm retired now,but it would be nice to get them fixed if it's not too expensive.

Send them to Luminox. For a small charge they will fix or give you a new watch, change the battery and test the time keeping and give you a cert.
